$50,000 Coca-Cola Stakes-Nominations

Baja Sur captures the Auburn Stakes

UNBEATEN BAJA SUR TOPS COCA-COLA NOMINATIONS

AUBURN, Wash. (June 9, 2019) – Undefeated and virtually untested, Baja Sur heads a list of eight 3-year-old colts and geldings nominated to the $50,000 Coca-Cola Stakes on Sunday, June 16.

The Coca-Cola at 6 ½ furlongs is the second of four open stakes for sophomores at the meet, and the final sprint. The remaining two stakes—$50,000 Seattle Slew and $50,000 Muckleshoot Derby—are contested at 1 1/16 and 1 1/8 miles.

Returning from a 10-month layoff, Baja Sur was dominant in the Auburn Stakes three weeks ago, powering to a five-length victory in a stakes record 1:07.98 for six furlongs. His 87 Beyer is exceptional for a 3-year-old.

A Washington-bred gelding by Smiling Tiger-Premo Copy, Baja Sur is virtually untested in three career starts, including a pair of blowout victories last year, and was voted both Emerald Downs’ and Washington Champion 2-Year-Old of 2018.

Of the others, Jack Van Berg, Runningwscissors and Perfect Dude have all performed well this year. Jack Van Berg returns from Arkansas, where in six starts at Oaklawn Park this spring he netted two seconds, one third and nearly $50,000 in purses. Runningwscissors and Perfect Dude finished second and third while making their stakes debuts in the Auburn,
