2019 Leading rider Gary Wales tripled last week bringing his victory total for this year to 47 which puts him third in the standings.

Darlyne Krieg

The 5-year-old mare Dontkissntell notched her first victory of 2020 as leading rider Alex Cruz got her to relax early and come with a big move late. Her four lifetime wins have all come around the Auburn oval.

Quarter Chute Café Groom of the Week

Ramon Fernandez is a vital part of the winning team at the Howard Belvoir barn. He has led several of the Belvoir winners to the track to this year.

Stephanie Fiorito

Stephanie Neil Fiorito started galloping in 1995 and since has become an important member of team Vince Gibson. She’s been involved in working with most of Gibson’s runners and has been a contributing factor to their success!

Bill Tollett

Mr. Tollett has made it official, he’s retiring as a racehorse trainer after 52 consecutive years. His first win at the meet and third of 2020 was last with week with Mitch and John E. In the 25 seasons at Emerald, Bill won 311 races.

Mr. Tollett won seven EmD stakes races including the 2015 Gottstein Futurity with Gold Rush Dancer.

Week Seventeen (Oct. 14-15)

WTBOA WA-Bred of the Week

WA-Bred: Tothemoonandback

Breeder: Rick & Debbie Pabst

Tothemoonandback won on debut for trainer Kay Cooper at the maiden-special weight level last Wednesday. The 2-year-old filly, who is owned by Grasshopper Stable, got up in the final few jumps to win by a head.

Leslie Mawing

Leslie arrived at Emerald Downs just a few weeks ago and ran his win total to 13 picking up six wins last week, three both days. He starts this week leading all riders with 11 September victories.

Jerry has been a part owner of six winners at the meet and the most recent one was with Stay in Grace. That was a very memorable victory as it was jockey Juan Gutierrez’s Emerald Downs record 1,420th win. The most in track history.

Quarter Chute Café Groom of the Week

Fausto Dejesus has been key to this season’s wins for trainer Manny Ortiz. Described as a go to guy at the Ortiz barn, Fausto has earned this week’s groom of the week award.

Freight Northwest Exercise Rider of the Week

Former jockey Arthur Ruiz has been a mainstay rider in the western United States from the 1980s & 90s. A member of a race riding family along with brothers Joe & Richard, Arthur continues his love of riding by exercising horses for trainer Manny Ortiz. Congrats to Arthur Ruiz and his lifetime in the saddle!

Vince Gibson

Mr. Gibson was victorious on two occasions last week – 12/1 outsider Sovereign Nation scored by a neck on Wednesday and 1/2-favorite Papa’s Golden Boy in Thursday’s feature ($20,900 allowance contest).

Vince started training in 1987 and has won races at all 25 Emerald Downs meetings. Gibson has totaled 584 wins in his career.

Week Sixteen (Oct. 7-8)

WA-Bred: Pistol Power

Pistol Power won for the third time at the meeting last week and now has won two straight races. The Rigoberto Velasquez-trained runner has now tallied eight career victories.

Alex Cruz

Alex Cruz has been on a roll of late, winning a race 19 consecutive days. Cruz had two three baggers last week and they came aboard Oh Marvelous Me, Pistol Power, Emma’s a Beast, Coastal Jazz, Constant Craving, and Urban Diva. Cruz leads Juan Gutierrez 57-45 with six days remaining to race.

Emerald Downs Owner of the Week

Kama’aina Thoroughbreds

They surprised bettors last week when Lolo Paniolo sprung an 8/1 upset in a $19,000 allowance race for trainer Kay Cooper. Lolo Paniolo ran the mile in 1:36.

Kama’aina Thoroughbreds have owned Thoroughbreds going back to the mid 2000s.Their top two runners were Madame Pele ($198,397) and Punahele Mare ($122,313).

Dagoberto Torres

Dagoberto Torres is a big part of the Sharon Ross barn. Not only does he handle all of his duties with excellence and dedicated work, he has been doing it for a long time. “Berto” as he is known does his work every day in a way that would challenge most people.

You see, Berto cannot hear and uses sign language to communicate with his co-workers around him. For Dagoberto Torres, it seems to make him only stronger.

In just her first season as an exercise rider at Emerald Downs, Stephanie Miller has established herself as a dedicated worker for trainer Vince Gibson. Stephanie works with one of the early winners of the meet in the likes of Smarty Jeans. With experience in Event-Horse activities, Stephanie has made her first season at Emerald Downs a winning one!

Sharon Ross

Sharon and husband Larry have made a huge impact on racing at Emerald Downs. They’ve been here since Day 1 back in June 1996. The Ross barn collected two more victories last week – Bishops of Compton and Mixo. They have now combined to win 590 races at the Auburn oval, ranking 5th all-time.

The 9-year-old chalked up his first win of the year last week and his ninth at Emerald Downs dating back to his maiden breaker in 2014.

Leslie Mawing

Mawing won two races last week including the Washington Cup Muckleshoot Tribal Classic aboard Unmachable. That was Mawing’s 46th Emerald Downs stakes victory. Leslie also won a race on the inaugural day of racing – June 20, 1996 – aboard Esperit De Bogen.

Elison’s Unmachable made a big rally to beat his elders in last weeks Washington Cup Muckleshoot Tribal Classic. Unmachable won three races at the meet including two stakes. Elison has won 140 races dating back to 2000. Her first winner was Bobbiblue Bayou at Boise.

Omar Zuniga Espinoza (Frank Lucarelli)

Omar Zuniga Espinoza is the handler for Elliott Bay who is a main resident at the Frank Lucarelli shedrow. He has led Elliott to the track in all 2020 showings.

Corey Delp

Delp Is the main exercise rider for one of Emerald Downs most senior members, Trainer Bob Meeking. Corey has worked with all of the Meeking winners this season.

Muckleshoot Casino Trainer of the Week

Robbie Baze doubled on the first day of October – Remembertobreathe in the sixth race and Grinder Sparksaglo just getting up in the ninth race for a neck victory. Baze has won 366 races at Emerald Downs.

Week Fourteen (Sept. 23-24)

WTBOA WA-Bred of the Week

WA-Bred: Unmachable

Unmachable got the job done in the first race held last week – a $19,000 allowance race. Unmachable has two wins, a second and a third in four starts at the meet. The 3-year-old is trained by Jack McCartney and owned by Tawnja Elison.

Francisco Diaz-Lopez

He rallied from just off the pace aboard the Jose Raudales-trained Peace Prince who held on in thrilling fashion to win by a heat at 10/1 over a sloppy racetrack last week. Diaz-Lopez has been a jockey since 2012.

Benchmark Thirty Two (Owners of Majestic Cafe)

The 3-year-old annexed a group of maidens in taking a 6-furlong event in a quick 1:09.65. Majestic Cafe is trained by Chris Stenslie and was ridden to victory by leading rider Alex Cruz.

Quarter Chute Café Groom of the Week

Jesus Ledzema

Grooms Cates Gold, Fiery Cause, Last One Standing and Dudley Studley for trainer Candi Cryderman. Each of the horses Jesus cares for has won at least one race this season at Emerald Downs.

Freight Northwest Exercise Rider of the Week

Tim Qualls is the main exercise rider in Trainer Jack McCartney’s barn. He regularly works with recent winner Unmachable who had an impressive score last week.

Muckleshoot Casino Trainer of the Week

Charles Essex

The longtime conditioner won two races last week raising his season total to nine. He won with French Coast (5/2) and Pin Up Lady (5/2), both at the route distance.

Essex’s best horse to run at Emerald was the fleet sprinter Handy N Bold who won four Governor’s Handicaps.

Week Thirteen (Sept. 18, 20)

WA-Bred: Dutton

Dutton improved his record to a perfect 2-for-2 with an eye-popping 14-length romp in last Sunday’s feature race. Dutton is trained by Washington Racing Hall of Famer Howard Belvoir and was ridden to victory by Jennifer Whitaker.

Jose Zunino

Mr. Zunino notched three wins last week – Kerralia (2/1), Sigrid’s Gold (3/2) and Midnight in Maui 6/1. Zunino has won 13 races at the meet and his career EmD total is 383.

Ron Bohlman

Sigrid’s Gold, who is owned by Blue Diamond Stable, Janet Johnson and Ron Bohlman won the first race Sunday over a muddy strip at the 1-mile distance. Ron’s also won earlier this month was Ms Lynn who also is trained by Roy Lumm.

Darrell LaFrance, who has been a groom for 52 years, is a key member for conditioner Charlie Essex. Darrell has led many of the Essex winners to the track in recent weeks. That makes Darrell our groom of the week!

Week Twelve (Sept. 9-10)

WA-Bred: Alittlelesstalk

Breeder: Warlock Stables, A. Floyd, K. Dougan, M. Hudson & Horseplayer’s Racing Club

Alittlelesstalk was simply to much for heavily favored Killarney Lass in last Thursday’s 25th Emerald Distaff at the 1 1/16-mile distance. The Roddina Barrett-trained 4-year-old filly drew away late to win the $40,000 race by 2 1/2 lengths.

Alittlelesstalk, who is by Demon Warlock and out of Trainingat the Bar, has now won three Emerald Downs stakes races and been the runner-up in three others.

Juan Gutierrez

Mr. Gutierrez, who began riding in 2000, swept the prestigious 85th Longacres Mile (Anothertwistafate) and 25th Emerald Distaff (Alittlelesstalk) last Thursday night.

Juan is just the second rider in EmD history to win both races in the same year. He enters the week of Sept. 17-18 with 1,406 lifetime victories, just 13 behind Gallyn Mitchell’s record 1,419.

Greg Conley, Chuck Conley and Terra Firma Farm

They are having a terrific 2020 campaign with seven wins from 24 starts and you can toss in eight more runner-up finishes!

Their winner last week was Buckley Bay in a starter/allowance race with a purse of $13,600. Buckley Bay has now won two races at the meet for the Emerald Downs Owner of the Week.

The Kay Cooper barn won two races last Thursday – Fortune’s Freude (7/2) and Lansky (5/2) were both open-length winners. Fortune’s Freude won by 2 1/2 lengths, running a flat mile in a snappy 1:35.15. Lansky was 6 1/2 lengths clear in a 6 1/2 furlong dash.

Week Ten (Aug. 26-27)

WTBOA WA-Bred of the Week

Time for Gold was a dominant winner in last week’s Shinpoch Stakes. She’s now won both stakes in the 2-year-old filly division. She is owned by Chad and Josh, trained by Frank Lucarelli and ridden to victory by Javier Matias.

Her clocking in the 6 1/2-furlong race of 1:15-3 is the fastest in track history by a 2-year-old filly.

James Wooten, Jr.

James won a race each day last week starting out with 38/1 outsider Preachinatdinner trained by Kenneth Stubblefield. It was Stubblefield’s first ever training victory at EmD. His second win came aboard Rosie Simkins’ Candied Lute when she dead-heated with Six Blessings in a maiden claimer.

Wooten has won 731 career racing and began riding in 1987.

Sunshine Emily sprinted clear and dominated her foes in a $7,500 claiming event at 6 furlongs. The win was her fourth of her career from just eight starts.

Gilberto Martinez Anaya is the groom of the week after leading impressive stakes winner Time For Gold to the track in her explosive winning effort. Gilberto is a valued member of the Frank Lucarelli Barn.

Vladimir has been around the PNW most of his life and has been a familiar face over the years in Oregon and at Emerald Downs. He gallops for Rodina Barrett and Shawna Whiteside, among others. Occasionally appearing in the program as a jockey on race day, Vladimir has stayed loyal to his role as an exercise rider.

Jack McCartney

Jack McCartney’s Unmachable came through as the 9/5 favorite in last Thursday’s Seattle Slew Stakes. Unmachable made up a lot of ground in the stretch to beat Gold Crusher by a half-length.
McCartney, who won the prior race that evening with Intelicrypt, began training in 2004.

Week Six (July 29-30)

Bullet Drill

The 5-year-old Washington bred took top honors in last Wednesday’s feature race. It was his second win at the meet from just two starts and is now 5-for-19 lifetime with all wins at Emerald Downs.

Javier Matias
Javier Matias ventured into the Winner’s Circle five times last week including aboard Time for Gold in the $36,000 Angie C Stakes.

Matias’ winners last Wednesday and Thursday were Bullet Drill ($7.80), Patricia L $14), Close the Show Lo ($5) and Time for Gold ($27.40).

Javier, who started riding in 1997, has won 1,241 races.

Jeff Cissell’s Swift as I Am was ultra-impressive in his career debut as he popped to the lead and never looked back, winning by 7¾ lengths against seven foes. Swift as I Am ran 5 furlongs in 57.11 seconds.

Lucarelli, the tracks all-time leader in wins, also scored with Bullet Drill, Patricia L, and Close the Show Lo.
Frank has opened up a five-win lead in the trainer standings.

Omache Kid

Omache Kid struck pay dirt for the third straight time at the meet Wednesday night (July 22), pulling off a narrow neck victory.

Omache Kid (Polish Miner – D J’s Storm) has now won four of his past five starts at EmD. During that span he was just 2-for-26 at other racetracks.

Eddie Martinez

 

Eddie had a good two days of riding last week – Winning with three of his 11 mounts for a 27% strike rate.
His wins came aboard Azadi ($17.60), Sacagewea ($5.80) and Pre Mo Diamond ($51.20).
Mr. Martinez, who began riding in 2010, sits fifth in the standings after 10 days with 10 victories.

George Todaro

Longtime Northwest owner George Todaro had a first and a second in two starts here last week. The winner was Sacagewea who broke her maiden at second asking.

Mr. Todaro has owned Thoroughbreds for many years and one of the best he part owner of was the fabulous mare Vasilika who won the 2019 Grade I Gamely Stakes at Santa Anita.

Mike works for the Joe Toye barn and led recent winner Tomorrow’s Mine to the track for his winning effort last week. New to the Pacific Northwest, Mike comes from a long time racing family in Arizona. His grandfather was Lyman Rollins, who was one of the ongoing top trainers at Turf Paradise in the 80s & 90s. Jill gallops horses for Frank Lucarelli, worked with a few winners this past week including Pre Mo Diamond. She also ponies horses during the races as well.

Joe Toye started five runners last week with two being victorious and another finishing second.
Mr. Toye’s winners were Hurricane Force ($4.60) and Tomorrow’s Mine ($6.00).
Joe began his training career in 1973 and has totaled 1,075 victories.

Papa’s Golden Boy

The 4-year-old gelding blew the doors off his rivals cutting out wicked fractions of 21 1/5 and 43 1/5 seconds to run off and win by eight lengths Thursday night.

The Harbor the Gold-Brookie Girl runner is now 2-for-2 at the meet as he disposed of allowance runners for a purse of $18,500 in a quick 1:09 1/5 for 6 furlongs.

Alex Cruz

Alex Cruz, who is making his first appearance at Emerald, is off to a fast start through the first eight days of the meet winning 14 races to be tied for first in the standings.

Cruz won two races Wednesday – Valid Prince ($17.60) and Missed the Boat ($7). He earned a three bagger Thursday – Wheel Rally ($15), Dreamcatcher ($5) and Pin Up Lady ($19.60).

Cruz, who started riding in 2013, entered the week ranked 10th in W% in the U.S. / Canada at 22.5%

Warlock Stables, Roddina Barrett and Kelly Dougan

 

Alittlelesstalk returned off a lengthy layoff to beat a solid group of fillies and mares taking a three-horse photo finish last Thursday (July 16).

The Washington bred by Demon Warlock, out of Trainingat the Bar, who was named Top 3-year-old Filly at the 2019 Emerald Downs season, has totaled five wins from 12 starts and earned $104,000.

Quarter Chute Café Groom of the Week

Ruben Ortiz

Ruben Ortiz is our Quarter Chute Cafe Groom of the week winner. He led Take Charge Deputy to the track in last week’s surprise win over Barkley at 33/1. Ruben joined trainer Jorge Rosales at Los Alamitos and followed the team to EmD in his first season here.

Trainer Rosales says Ruben is a dedicated worker and takes care of several of the Rosales F1 runners. Hat’s Off to Ruben Ortiz, our groom of the week!

Freight Northwest Exercise Rider of the Week

Gerardo Martin

Congratulations to this week’s Freight Northwest Exercise Rider of the Week Gerardo Martin. Gerardo joined trainer Jeff Metz’s team at Los Alamitos and is in his first year at Emerald Downs. He gallops Perfect Promise who was an impressive winner last Thursday in a filly/mare event in which she covered 6 furlongs in a zesty 1:10.68 over a fast track.

Muckleshoot Casino Trainer of the Week

Bob Meeking

Longtime trainer Bob Meeking’s Wheel Rally ($15) overcame adversity and charged up the fence to win a thriller Thursday night – necking out favored Freiburg.

Mr. Meeking has been training racehorses for decades and his runner Find Our Star won the 1996 Eagle Hardware Derby. The first Derby at Emerald Downs.

Seattlesbestsecret

Disposing of six rivals right from the start in his career debut, Seattlesbestsecret went on to post a 3¾-length victory in a $18,500 maiden special weight contest last week. The Steve Bullock-trained 2-year-old gelding completed the 4½ furlongs in 51.75 seconds paying $14 to win.

Quick Pix Café Jockey of the Week

Alex Anaya

Two wins and three seconds from 13 rides led to Alex Anaya being named the Quick Pix Café Jockey of the Week.

Alex captured Wednesday’s opener aboard Remembertobreathe (4/1) from off the pace and on Thursday went wire-to-wire on National Browser (4/1). Mr. Anaya has 42 lifetime victories.

Emerald Downs Owner of the Week

Big Bill and Company #1

The big gray Doctor Bruce S. was bumped at the start before making a big wide move in last Wednesday’s eighth race to pass all his rivals and score by 1½ lengths. The 11-year-old has now won nine races at EmD from 65 starts.

This is the third straight year Doctor Bruce S. has won for owners Big Bill and Company #1. Congrats!

Freight Northwest Exercise Rider of the Week

Dan Brock

Hats off to Dan Brock, our Exercise Rider of the Week! He gallops horses for trainer Candice Cryderman who visited the Emerald Downs Winner’s Circle with La Waun this past week.
Brock was a mainstay as a jockey in the Pacific Northwest and rode both sides of the U.S./Canadian border back in the 80s & 90s, winning 1,298 races.

Muckleshoot Casino Trainer of the Week

Sam Dronen

Sam started three horses last week and two were led into the Winner’s Circle after the race. Waverly Way won Wednesday afternoon and Omache Kid became the first horse at the meet to win two times when he won a neck decision on Thursday.

Mr. Dronen is in his 30th year of training and has won 167 races.

Week Two (July 1-2)

Elliott Bay

The Harbor the Gold runner was a romping winner last week in a $18,500 allowance race, pulling away to a 7½-length score. The 5-year-old out of Melba Jewel was ridden by Javier Matias and conditioned by leading trainer Frank Lucarelli.

Elliott Bay has three lifetime victories and has earned$145,000.

Quick Pix Café Jockey of the Week

Jennifer Whitaker

Jennifer Whitaker, the all-time leading female in Emerald Downs (494), notched two victories and two seconds from just four mounts in week #2 to be named Quick Pix Café Jockey of the Week.
Jen won the first race of week aboard Doubleshotofheaven and the final race of the week on Rough Ride. Both runners were trained by Washington Racing Hall of Famer Howard Belvoir.

Emerald Downs Owner of the Week

Congrats to our owner of the week whose homebred Windy Point (WA) was all business on July 1, as he came from just off the pace $18,900 allowance race in a quick 1:03-4 for 5½ furlongs.

The 3-year-old filly has two wins two second in four career starts against the same sex.

Angel Cruz

Angel escorted Sharon’s winners last week and has been a mainstay at the Ross barn for seven years. He cares for all three of the Emerald Racing Club Horses which includes Seattle Smoke and Mojave. He shifts his focus in the Winter to the Farm where he handles off-season duties there. The right-hand man of the Ross Barn is Angel Cruz.

Exercise Rider of the Week

Congratulations to Clark Jones, our exercise rider of the week. Clark works with most of the horses for trainer Chris Stenslie and The One Horse Will Do Corp. A lifelong rider, Clark has been a mainstay in the PNW and also serves as a valet in the Emerald Downs Jockey’s Room as well. Hats off to Clark Jones, Our Exercise Rider of the Week!

Muckleshoot Casino Trainer of the Week

Two blowout victories last Thursday (July 2) earned Chris Stenslie the Muckleshoot Casino Trainer of the Week. Coastal Tulips was 9 lengths clear at the wire in a $15,000 claimer and the first-time starter Daffodil Sweet scooted to the front and never looked back, checking in 8 3/4 lengths ahead of the runner-up at a big price (17/1).

Chris has won 259 races all-time at Emerald Downs.


Week One (June 24-25)

Makah Lane

Makah Lane notched his third lifetime win in just seven starts when taking the Opening Day feature (June 24) by 5 lengths for trainer Bonnie Jenne. The 4-year-old gelding was ridden by Juan Gutierrez and is owned by Q Stable and Friendship Stable. Makah Lane was victorious in the 2019 WA Cup Sophomore Stakes at Emerald Downs.

Quick Pix Cafe Jockey of the Week

  • Rode three winners opening week from 13 mounts (23.1%).
  • Tied for second in the standings after the first week of racing.
  • Winners – So Figure It Out (9/2), Chris the Beaver (5/2) and Cate’s Gold (19/1).
  • Cerapio started his riding career in 2015 and has 51 career victories and was an exercise rider for John Sadler the past two years.

Art McFadden

This week’s owner of the week is Art McFadden. Art is an icon in Northwest Horse Racing after serving as President & GM of Portland Meadows and the Track’s Announcer as well.

Art has owned several talented runners over the years including Corvallis Dee ($202,000 in earnings), Bub ($131,000) and Melcapwalker ($177k) that have sported his Orange and Black colors which are ironically the same colors of his beloved Oregon State Beavers.

Art is well known and well loved by all that came to know him especially in the Portland community. Congratulations to our Owner of The Week, Art McFadden!

Victor Pulido was named the Quarter Chute Cafe Groom of the Week ending June 25. Mr. Pulido hails from the Bonnie Jenne barn and he looks after their two winners from last week. He’s a longtime groom for the Jenne barn and is a dedicated worker.

  • Christina works horses in the morning for trainer Bonnie Jenne and the Coopers

Bonnie Jenne sent out two runners opening week – And both hit the finish line first!

She won the opening day feature with Makah Lane and also won last Thursday’s opener with Full Speed Ahead.
