2021 Weekly Honors

Sept. 18-19

Jockey: Alex Cruz won five races last week including one with no irons, riding Akasi in the 4th race to an exciting win.
Trainer: Roddina Barrett saddled Unlimiteddataplan to win last Saturday’s opener and Discreet Demon who broke his maiden in Sunday’s finale.
Owner: Saratoga West won two races last week with runners Pin Up Lady and Guarding Elk Camp (21/1).  Saratoga West was the Leading Owner by wins at Emerald Downs in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
WA-Bred: Slew’s Tiz Whiz (Owner: KD Thoroughbreds) notched his third win at the meeting in last Sunday in the featured $21,000 allowance race for t. The 3-year-old gelding was bred by Karl Krieg.

Sept. 11-12

Jockey: Juan Gutierrez
Trainer: Joe Toye became first trainer with a three-bagger at the meet.
Owner: Teresa Abila, Santos Rosales, Generoso Tandiama III (Officer of War)
Washington-Bred: Cobra Jet (Bred by Terry and Mary Lou Griffin)
Groom: Jose R. Menendez Rivas for trainer Howard Belvoir.
Exercise rider: Stephanie Miller who works for trainer Vince Gibson.

Sept. 2-5

Jockey: Alex Anaya won four races last week including back-to-back winners in Sunday’s third and fourth races. Anaya has 80 lifetime victories.
Trainer: Alan Bozell on two races last week including Saturday’s feature with Zippin Sevenz who won by a head.
Owner: Friendship Stable, Q Stable and Craig Fredrickson (owners of Harbor Outlaw)
Washington-Bred: Cody’s Choice (Bred by Vince and Pam Gibson)
Groom: Arianna Cortez, who works for trainer Doris Harwood, groomed two winners last week.
Exercise rider: Pedro Enriquez who works for trainers Jason Homer and Scott Freeman.

Aug. 26-29

Jockey: Julien Couton

Owner: John and Janene Maryanski and Riverbend Stable
Washington-Bred: Stand To (Bred by John Sneesby)
Groom: Kathy Freeman for Trainer Scott Freeman as they won with Prince Of Luck on Sunday at EmD. The husband & wife team are long time members of the racing industry in the PNW!
Exercise rider: Corey Delp who works for trainers Jason Homer and Scott Freeman.

Aug. 19-22

Jockey: Leslie Mawing sat aboard three winners last weekend including Christine’s Jack who won a mile race by a whopping 20 3/4 lengths. Mr. Mawing has won 2,750 Thoroughbred races.

Trainer: Kay Cooper won both 2-year-old stakes last Sunday with the impressive winners A View From Above (WTBOA Lads) and Koron (Barbara Shinpoch).

Owner: Rancho Viejo sent out two runners last weekend and both went to the Winner’s Circle. Frieburg Saturday and Turnaround on Sunday.

WA-Bred: Koron (Rick & Debbie Pabst breeder) was victorious in Sunday’s Barbara Shinpoch to improve her record to 2-for-2. She won Sunday’s stakes by 5 1/2 lengths.

Exercise Rider: Kyrie Baze for trainer Rigoberto Velasquez, they teamed up to saddled multiple wins this past week.

Groom: Elodio Madrigal for Trainer Nick Lowe – won the Challenge QH stakes

Aug. 12-15

Jockey: James Wooten, Jr. picked up a victory last Thursday night riding Command Sgt Major for trainer Bonnie Jenne. Wooten has won a career total of 753 races including four the past week at the Tillamook Fair.

Trainer: Mike Puhich won the Longacres Mile for a second time as a trainer with

Owner: Giddyup Stables (Bob & Molly Rondeau) took down the 86th Longacres Mile last Sunday with Background.

WTBOA WA-Bred: Judicial (Bred by Mr. & Mrs. William T. Griffin)

Exercise Rider: Byron Rodriguez (regular exercise rider on both Background and Princess of Cairo).

Groom: Edmundo Ruiz (Sandi Gann).

Aug. 5-8

Jockey: McKenna Anderson won her first career race last Saturday aboard 19/1 longshot Tippytap On Sand for trainer Dione Asmussen. She followed that up with another win or her very next ride the next day on Count Alexei.

Trainer: WA Racing Hall of Fame member Howard Belvoir collected two wins last week and now has totaled 2,160 career training victories spanning seven decades. Mr. Belvoir ranks third all-time with 798 local victories at Emerald Downs.

Owner: K D Thoroughbreds (Darlyne Krieg) had an impressive winner last week when Slew’s Tiz Whiz won a optional/claiming race for 3-year-olds by 2 3/4 lengths. Slew’s Tiz Whiz, who is trained by Tom Wenzel, is by Slew’s Tiznow and out of the dam Ros’s Girl.

WTBOA WA-Bred: Check the Gear (Bred by Connie Belshay). Very impressive in his career debut for trainer Chris Stenslie last week when winning by 11 1/4 lengths in a 2-year-old maiden special weight race. He’s by Coast Guard and out of the dam Great Mom.

Exercise Rider: Troy Grissom is our exercise rider of the week for trainer Candi Cryderman.

Groom: Brad Zabreznik is our groom of the week for Team Dionne Asmussen! A former jockey in British Columbia, he cares for Tippytap On Sand who was an impressive winner last week at big odds.

July 29-Aug. 1

Jockey: Edgar Velasco teamed up with Little John this past Sunday coming from 7th and last to get the money at 6/1. Edgar has also won races in Texas and California in his career that started in 2016.

Trainer: Kay Cooper

Owner: Code Four Stable (Lady Campbell)

WTBOA WA-Bred: Nationheart (Bred by Rick & Debbie Pabst)

Exercise Rider: Brad Balcom gallops Decimate for Howard Belvoir who won impressively at first asking last week.

Groom: Lauro Bernal helped team Cooper to a multi-win week last week to earn the honor of Groom of the Week.



July 22-25

Jockey: Kevin Radke won a race each of the three days of racing last week. Radke has collected 1,128 wins in his career with 548 coming at Emerald Downs.

Trainer: Charles Essex ended the week with three victories including the Kent Stakes with the 3-year-old filly Blazingbellablu. It was Mr. Essex’s 15th stakes win at Emerald Downs.

Owner: Jody Peetz (One Horse Will Do Corp.) made two trips to the Red Hook Winner’s Circle on Saturday night with a couple of impressive runners. Hard to Deny and Daffodil Sweet both won allowance races.

WA-Bred: Mike Man’s Gold (Keith & Jan Swagerty breeders) improved his all-time EmD win total to 26 with a 5-length score last Thursday night.

Groom: Jose Ledzema is the groom of the week. He is the handler of Float On who put forth a hearty victory last week for trainer Candi Cryderman.

Exercise Rider: Nicolle Disdier exercises recent stakes winner Blazingbellablu for trainer Charles Essex. Disdier, who has won 32 races as a jockey, has been a great addition to the Essex barn with her positive spirit in the morning hours.


July 15-18

Jockey: Eddie Martinez

WA-Bred: Cobra Jet (Terry & Mary Lou Griffin, who also bred Angie C Stakes winner Slack Tide)

Groom: A Native of The Virgin Islands, Kasim Rhymer looks after several of the Jeff Metz Trained Horses at Emerald Downs. One of those is Atta Boy Billy who was a recent impressive winner! You’ll see Kasim every morning at the Metz barn doing his part to help Team Metz win races at Emerald Downs!

July 8-11

WA-Bred: A View from Above (Bred by Rick & Debbie Pabst)

Groom: Ashley Potts is a major part of the success at Team Vince Gibson! Her efforts have contributed to a very successful season at The Gibson barn. One of the Stars of their barn Papas Golden Boy continued his winning ways in The Governor’s Stakes!

Exercise Rider: “Muscles” Munro gallops Gold N Glitter for last year’s leading Owner & Trainer combination “Chad n Josh” and Frank Lucarelli. The 2-year-old filly had an explosive win by a wide margin in her debut run last week.

June 30-July 3

Jockey: Juan Gutierrez collected nine wins in the three days of racing including five on June 30.

Trainer: Robert Bean notched his first EmD victory with Street Demand in the first race on Fireworks Spectacular evening.

Owner: Seamist Racing LLC (Owner Michael Dadasovich owns Windribbon who was very impressive on June 30 running 6 furlongs in a blazing 1:07.53).

WA-Bred: Blazingbellablu (Rainbow Meadows-Petra Lewin and Charles Essex breeders) took the July 1 feature race by 3/4 of a length. Her record stands at 5 / 2-2-0, $39,400 in purses.

Groom: Marshall Allen is a key Member for team Stenslie and looks after many of the barn’s top performers such as recent winner Hard To Deny. Aside from being a terrific horseman, Marshall is literally a lifesaver as last season an individual had a heart attack in the barn area and Marshall sprung into action performing CPR and was able to get the person breathing again!

Exercise Rider: Jill Sarrano is a longtime gallop rider at EmD but recently has plied her talents for Team Herbertson and Bella’s Back who was an impressive winner last week! Jill gallops all of the Bean Acres horses and trainer Ari Herbertson who are new this season to EmD.

June 23-24

Jockey: Jose Zunino

WA-Bred: Spittin Image (Bred by Bret Christopherson)

Groom: Anette Holguin is our Groom of the week from The Little Barn Racing Stable, Anette cares for Besos For Lilly who was a recent surprise winner! Anette is a key member of Little Barn Racing’s team! Congrats to Anette Holguin, our Groom of the Week!

Exercise Rider: Santos Rosales is at the Rosales Shedrow every morning as he gallops some of the top contenders in the Barn. Last Wednesday, some of the work Santos put in paid off in a big way as Azadi won the first race of the evening card and Rita Lorraine remained undefeated as she went 3 & 0 later in the night. Hats off to Santos Rosales!

June 16-20

Exercise Rider: Annie Felt (She’s a new talent to EmD for Trainer Doris Harwood and has earned the weekly award as the Exercise Rider of the Week with her dedicated work ethics as she is a key member of the Harwood barn!)

June 9-10

Clark gallops horses like Spittin Image who recently scored last week at EmD for trainer Chris Stenslie)
Groom: Jorge Alvarado is a key member of the Candi Cryderman Barn as the team recorded four wins last week with Gordon Anthony, Mean Sharon, I want One and Rita Lorraine! Alvarado has worked with Team Cryderman for many years)

June 2-3

Jockey: Alex Cruz (Became the first rider in EmD History to win a race in 31 consecutive days of racing over the 2020-2021 seasons. Cruz is currenty 2nd in the standings after being Leading Rider last year
