TRAINING UNDERWAY FOR 2023 SEASON
AUBURN, Wash. (Feb. 27, 2023) – Defending Longacres Mile champion Slew’s Tiz Whiz was first on the track as training began Monday for the 2023 live racing season at Emerald Downs.
The 2022 Washington Horse of the Year was among 114 horses on the grounds with more expected to arrive daily in advance of the 28th season of racing which begins Saturday, May 6. Trainers spotted inn the stable area included Howard Belvoir, Candi Cryderman, Shelly Crowe, Steve Bullock, David Martinez, Jose Navarro, Blaine Wright, and Tom Wenzel.
Slew’s Tiz Whiz has undergone an off-season ownership change from K D Thoroughbreds (Darlyne Krieg) to Slew’s Crew Racing, the latter composed of Roy and Tammy Brewer, Terry and Mary Lou Griffin, Jason and JoDee Snyder, and trainer Tom Wenzel and wife Melissa. According to Roy Brewer, the sale of Slew’s Tiz Whiz was the culmination of a three-year phase-out from racing after the passing of Karl Krieg in 2019. The Whidbey Island to Emerald Downs commute had also become increasingly difficult for Darlyne Krieg.
In 2023, Slew’s Tiz Whiz bids to become only the second repeat winner of the Longacres Mile at Emerald Downs. Although ownership has changed, the plan is to continue using the dark green silks of K D Thoroughbreds.
The 88th running of the $150,000 Longacres Mile is Sunday, Aug. 13. The $50,000 Budweiser Stakes on Sunday, June 25 is the first stakes of the season for older horses.
Training hours are 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. daily.
