Hey Sequoia and Eswan Flores

HEY SEQUOIA RALLIES TO VICTORY IN SUNDAY FEATURE

AUBURN, Wash. (August 5, 2018) – Hey Sequoia and hot-riding Eswan Flores rallied past Wheel Rally for a three-quarter-length victory in Sunday’s $18,500 Muckleshoot Casino Purse for 3-year-olds at Emerald Downs.

With Flores riding his fourth winner Sunday, Hey Sequoia ran 6 ½ furlongs in 1:15.89 and paid $19, $7.40 and $5.40. Tom Wenzel is the winning trainer for owner William Bridges of Tacoma, Wash.

A British Columbia-bred by Cause to Believe, Hey Sequoia finished third in the 2017 Gottstein Futurity, and is 2-2-3 in 10 career starts with $45,862 in earnings, including $10,175 for Sunday’s triumph.

Wheel Rally, ridden by Rocco Bowen, held second and paid $7.40 and $4.80, while Legitimate Cause, ridden by Kevin Orozco, rallied inside for third and paid $6.20.

Trump Itz, Golden Cowboy, Great Eagle and Cody’s Choice completed the order of finish. Take Charge Deputy was scratched.

Wheel Rally shook off Cody’s Choice after a half-mile in :44.27, opened a four-length lead past mid-stretch but couldn’t resist Hey Sequoia late.

For Flores, it was his first four-win day at Emerald Downs and boosted his season total to 34 wins.

NOTES: Flores and Wenzel also combined with Afleet Hope ($7.60) in Sunday’s eighth race. . In only the second Quarter Horse race this season, trainer Kurt Calton saddled Poutn On the Wagon ($12) and Doctor Fantastic to a one-two finish in a $5,000 allowance for 3-year-olds and up at 400 yards. A 4-year-old Alberta-bred, Poutn On the Wagon and is 10-1-1 in 12 lifetime starts. . . Curlin Rules worked five furlongs in 1:02 4/5 Sunday at Del Mar for trainer John Sadler and ships to Emerald Downs for the $200,000 Longacres Mile (G3) on Sunday, August 12. . . Conquest Windycity, also expected to run in the Mile, breezed four furlongs in :48 1/5 at Churchill Downs for trainer Mike Maker. . .Top Quality, high-weighted at 122 lbs for the $50,000 Emerald Distaff, worked four furlongs in :48 3/5 for trainer Blaine Wright. . .Toby, a Portland shipper owned by Katharine Schuette, prevailed in the Championship heat of Sunday’s Corgi Races. . .Entries for the Longacres Mile and $50,000 Emerald Distaff will be drawn Wednesday morning. . .Live racing resumes Friday with first post 6:30 p.m.
