PARTY POOPER PREVAILS IN SATURDAY FEATURE
AUBURN, Wash. (Sept. 9, 2017) – Party Pooper wore down 43-1 long shot Coming in Hot and edged away for a 1 ¾-length victory Saturday in the $11,200 Muckleshoot Casino Purse for 3-year-olds and up at Emerald Downs.
Ridden by Erick Lopez, Party Pooper zipped six furlongs in a brisk 1:08.67 and paid $3.60 as the betting favorite. Candi Tollett is the winning trainer for John Parker, the meet’s leading owner with 18 wins.
A 5-year-old Kentucky-bred by Desert Party, Party Pooper certainly has the winning habit at Emerald Downs, racking up seven wins here the last two years.
Doctor Bruce S., a 14-1 shot ridden by Francisco Orduna-Rojas, finished second while Coming in Hot held third under Lorenzo Lopez.
CHIEF KNOW IT ALL TAKES $150,000 B.C. DERBY
Riser’s quest to sweep the Emerald Downs Derby and British Columbia Derby came up just short Saturday at Hastings Racecourse.
Gate-to-wire winner of the July 30 Emerald Downs Derby, Riser was overtaken in the final strides as Chief Know It All and jockey Rico Walcott prevailed by a nose over Trooper John in 1:51.95 for 1 1/8 miles. Riser, the 2-to-1 favorite, was a neck back in third place and More Power to Him, ridden by Rocco Bowen, finished fourth.
Riser, bidding for a $25,000 bonus for sweeping the Emerald Downs Derby and B.C. Derby, is now 3-1-1 in five starts this year for trainer Blaine Wright and owner Jared Chappell. Riser’s overall mark is 4-1-1 in nine starts with $121,095 in earnings, including $15,000 for Saturday’s third-place finish.
Chief Know It All is 5-for-12 lifetime with $317,000 in earnings, including a B.C. Derby first-place check of $82,500.
In the $100,000 British Columbia Oaks, Emerald Downs’ shippers Top Quality and Little Dancer finished third and fourth, respectively, as Daz Lin Dawn improved to seven-for-seven in 2017 with a neck victory in 1:51.77 for 1 1/8 miles. Little Dancer, ridden by Bowen, was bidding for a $25,000 bonus that goes to any horse sweeping the Washington Oaks and B.C. Oaks.
NOTES: At Los Alamitos, Gold Rush Dancer finished last as the even-money favorite in Saturday’s $75,000 E.B. Johnston Stakes won by defending champion Soi Phet ($9.40) in 1:35.71. . .Kevin Orozco rode three winners and Jose Zunino two on Emerald Downs’ 10-race card. . .Although Riser and Top Quality both finished third in Canada, Blaine Wright continued his winning ways at Emerald Downs with two wins and leads Joe Toye 50-33 atop the trainers’ standings standings. . .In the meet’s first 1 ¼-mile race, Commander Lute ($17.60) held off 4-5 favorite Gold Monkey in 2:02.73.
