Gazing (No. 5) prevails narrowly over Daddyalwayssays


AUBURN, Wash. (July 8, 2017) – Gazing wore down Daddyalwayssays and scored a head victory Saturday in the $18,500 Muckleshoot Casino Purse for 3-year-old fillies at Emerald Downs.

With Rocco Bowen riding, Gazing covered 6 ½ furlongs in 1:15.23 and paid $4, $2.40 and $2.10. Terry Gillihan is the trainer for owner William Sandeman.

A Washington-bred by Harbor the Gold-Light My Ducks, Gazing is 2-2-0 in four starts with earnings of $23,625, including $10,175 for Saturday’s triumph.

Daddyalwayssays, ridden by Juan Gutierrez, dug in gamely through the stretch, but settled for second place and paid $3 and $2.20.

Spirit Bay, a Vancouver shipper ridden by Julien Couton, finished third and paid $2.20, and was followed by Sorceress Warning, Irish Lass and National Browser.

Daddyalwayssays shook off 44-to-1 long shot National Browser into the lane, running a half-mile in :45.24, but was immediately challenged by Gazing and the sophomore fillies battled head-and-head through the lane to the wire.

NOTES: Jerre to Carrie ($4.80) became the meet’s first four-time winner with a hard-earned victory over Ila Veiw in 1:09.06 for six furlongs.
