NAN ELIZABETH RALLIES FOR FEATURE RACE VICTORY
AUBURN, Wash. (August 4, 2023) – Nan Elizabeth surged late and collared Reign of Fire in the final strides for a neck victory in Friday’s $24,000 JD Plumbing Purse for older fillies and mares at Emerald Downs.
Winning her third straight, Nan Elizabeth ran six furlongs in 1:10.14 and paid $9.20 as third choice in the wagering. Kevin Orozco authored the perfectly timed ride for owner/trainer Luciano Median Gabriel.
A 5-year-old California-bred by Flat Out, Nan Elizabeth has risen the local claiming ranks from $5,000 to Friday’s victory for $25,000. Her overall record is 5-3-3 in 20 starts with earnings of $75,160, including 3-1-1 in five starts and earnings of $36,050 at Emerald Downs.
Reign of Fire won the pace battle with Ms. Parkside, edging clear past mid-stretch, but lost the war as Nan Elizabeth flew late for the victory.
Ms Parkside, the even-money favorite bidding for her fourth win of the meet, finished third while Smiling Thunder, Brilliant Bird, and Frisco Frills rounded out the order of finish. Nomi Lackee was scratched earlier in the day.
NOTES: Friday’s mutuel handle was $854,941 on a seven-race card. . .After missing two weeks with an ankle injury, Javier Matias was back in action with a victory on Awesome Move ($4.40) in race four. With 646 wins, Matias ranks fifth all-time at Emerald Downs. . .A triple winner here last year, Pearl River Delta ($13.20) scored her first win of 2023, prevailing by a head over Gold Coast Girl in a $12,500 claimer for older fillies and mares. . .Rocco Bowen was the lone jockey with two wins. . .Luis Negron rode Lucky Code ($26.60) to a gate to wire victory in race four and owns a 46-42 lead on Alex Cruz in the riders’ standings. . .Live racing continues Saturday with 5 p.m. twilight racing.
