Semi Sweet
Wednesday, Sept. 23, Race 8 $15,000 starter/optional claiming older fillies & mares, 1 Mile: The track was muddy Sunday and wet weather could wreak havoc again this week at Emerald Downs. Always a bummer to handicap the races only to have rain wash away half the field with scratches.Let’s hope not because there are some intriguing races, especially the latter half of the card. In Race 8, Semi Sweet and Gazing are hard-hitting routers from solid barns and proven at this level. Both should get plenty of pace to chase with Lady Campbell and Judicial stretching out off sprint victories. A slight nod to Semi Sweet, in the exacta in nine of 13 at the distance.
La Waun
Thursday, Sept. 24, Race 10 $15,000 starter/optional claiming 3 year olds & Up, 6 Furlongs: Several interesting races Thursday including three straight 2-year-old dashes at 5 1/2 furlongs, most notably an $18,500 maiden special with four promising first-time starters. The opener is a $19,000 allowance for 3-year-olds at a mile topped by state champion and two-time stakes winner Unmachable, already with five stakes placings from six career starts. In the featured 10th, La Waun drops after showing brief speed in the Longacres Mile two weeks ago.The 5-year-old gray has been double tough vs. these types, compiling a 5-4-0 mark in 12 starts at Emerald Downs. With speedsters So Lucky and Capital Expense in the lineup, La Waun figures a good trip from slightly off the pace. Missed the Boat is a triple winner this season and ran the fastest mile of the meet (since topped by Anothertwistafate) while airing at this class level three weeks ago. This gelding has come a long way the last 10 months and also is a capable sprinter. Legitimate Cause dropped a heart breaker to Buckley Bay two weeks ago, but is razor sharp and will be rallying into a hot pace.
