COUNTDOWN ON FOR INAUGURAL CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY

Nominations close this weekend in advance of one of the biggest racing weekends in Emerald Downs’ history. Championship Sunday featuring four stakes worth an aggregate $350,000 in purses is slated for Sunday, August 11.

The 84th renewal of the $200,000 Longacres Mile (G3) is the centerpiece of a spectacular afternoon of racing also featuring the $50,000 Emerald Distaff, $50,000 Muckleshoot Derby and $50,000 Washington Oaks. A special $0.50 all stakes Pick 4 combining the Mile, Distaff, Derby and Oaks will be offered.

Nominations for the Muckleshoot Derby and Washington Oaks close Saturday, while nominations for the Longacres Mile and Emerald Distaff close Sunday. Entries for all four stakes will be drawn Wednesday, August 7.

  • California invader More Power to Him earned an 83 Beyer for his minor upset in the $50,000 Mt. Rainier Stakes last Sunday, running 1 1/16 miles in  1:42.62, and is expected to remain in town through the Longacres Mile.
  • Anyportinastorm, who sat out the Mt. Rainier, breezed four furlongs in :47 3/5 Monday for trainer Blaine Wright.

CEBALLOS SIDELINED INDEFINITELY FOLLOWING SUNDAY SPILL

Jockey Franklin Ceballos is likely to miss several months of action following a spill in Sunday’s first race, in which 2-year-old colt Racy Opinion clipped heels and unseated Ceballos.

Ceballos sustained fractures of the T6 and T7 vertebrae in the fall, according to agent Vito Lucarelli. Ceballos was released from Harborview Medical Center on Monday, but will be in a body cast for 15 days and wear a back brace for about three months.

A 19-year-old Venezuelan, Ceballos is the meet’s sixth leading rider with 28 wins and ranks fourth in earnings with $350,819. He has three stakes wins at the meet, two aboard 3-year-old gelding Baja Sur and one on 4-year-old filly Best of Me.
