Sunday features a stakes double-bill for 3-year-olds: $50,000 Irish Day Stakes for colts and geldings, $50,000 Kent Stakes for fillies–both 6 1/2 furlongs.
Executive Chef figures to go favored in the Irish Day while Slack Tide looms a short price in the Kent. Executive Chef romped by four lengths in the June 19 Auburn Stakes, running six furlongs in 1:08.84 while posting a mild $10.20 upset. Trained by Blaine Wright and owned by John and Janene Maryanski and Riverbend Stable, the Kentucky-bred son of Cairo Prince is 2-2-1 from five starts with $61,300 in earnings. Slack Tide powered to a four-length win as the 4 to 5 favorite in the June 19 Seattle Stakes, running six furlongs in 1:09.39 under Evin Roman. Also trained by Wright and owned by Ten Broeck Farm, the Kentucky-bred daughter of Shaman Ghost is 3-2-0 in five starts with earnings of $84,350.
Wright has won four of six stakes so far in 2022, and Sunday’s victory by first-time starter Runnin Out of Days in the King County Express was his 50th stakes win at Emerald Downs, tying him with the late Jim Penney for No. 3 on the track’s all-time list.
