COASTAL JAZZ RED-HOT TO BEGIN 2023 SEASON
AUBURN, Wash. (June 11, 2023) – Coastal Jazz swept past the entire field in the final furlong and scored a 1 ½-length victory in the $24,000 Cutwater Spirits Purse for 3-year-olds and up Sunday at Emerald Downs.
Ridden by Kevin Radke, Coastal Jazz covered 5 ½ furlongs in 1:03.87 and paid $8.20 as third choice in the compact field of five. Steve Bullock is trainer and co-owner with partners Ron and Nina Hagen, Don & Alice Whitmore, and Ron Bohlman.
A 5-year-old Washington-bred by Coast Guard, Coastal Jazz is two for two at the meet with earnings of $27,840. His overall mark is 7-1-4 from 24 starts with earnings of $106,769.
Coastal Jazz lagged back as A View From Above, Alleva, and Capital Expense dueled through fractions of :22.02 and :45.06, angled outside into the stretch and collared Cody’s Choice in the final furlong and won going away.
Cody’s Choice, 6 to 1 fourth choice ridden by Alex Cruz, momentarily gained command past mid-stretch but was unable to hold off an onrushing Coastal Jazz. Alleva, the 7 to 5 favorite, finished third while A View From Above and Capital Expense rounded out the order of finish.
