COASTAL JAZZ PREVAILS IN SATURDAY FEATURE RACE

AUBURN, Wash. (Aug. 21, 2021) – Coastal Jazz swept to the lead into the lane and held off My Father Footstep for a 1 ¼-length victory Saturday in the $13,200 Elysian Purse for 3-year-olds and up at Emerald Downs.

With Juan Gutierrez riding, Coastal Jazz ran six furlongs in 1:11.27 and paid $14.60 as fourth choice in a field of seven. Steve Bullock is the winning trainer for owner Gold Coast Racing.

A 3-year-old Washington-bred by Coast Guard, Coastal Jazz was stakes-placed as a 2-year-old and has won two of four starts in 2021. His overall mark is 3-1-1 in 11 starts with earnings of $36,140.

My Father Footstep, a California shipper ridden by Edgar Velasco, held second at odds of 9 to 1 while R B Eye, ridden by Javier Matias at odds of 9 to 1, rallied from last to finish third. Candied Lute, Brother Robert, L D’ Rado Goldrush and Whenducksfly rounded out the complete order of finish.

Whidbey Prince was a late scratch at the gate.

NOTES: Alex Cruz received two awards after race six in the winner’s circle, one for his record 46-day winning streak and the other for a victory in the recent jockeys’ foot race. . .Juan Gutierrez and Julien Couton each rode two winners. . Gutierrez hit the 50-win mark for the 17th time at Emerald Downs. . .2-year-old filly Fire Escape ($5) became the first Emerald Downs winner for freshman sire Straight Fire, romping in race four under Eddie Martinez for Blaine Wright and Finger Gun Racing. . . Saturday’s second race was the Woody Woodruff Memorial Purse to honor the popular longtime mutuel clerk who died last year at age 70. . .Live racing continues Sunday with first post 2:30 p.m.
