WASHINGTON CUP ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 27
AUBURN, Wash. (August 20, 2017) – Sixty-three horses including a trio of runners from last week’s Longacres Mile have been nominated to the Xpressbet Washington Cup, to be run Sunday, August 27 at Emerald Downs.
The Xpressbet Washington Cup features six stakes exclusively for Washington/B.C.-bred or sired runners with an aggregate $300,000 in purses. Now in its 15th year, the Xpressbet Washington Cup includes male and female stakes races for 2-year-olds, 3-year-olds and older horses.
The $50,000 Muckleshoot Tribal Classic for older horses at 1 1/16 miles drew nine nominations led by Mach One Rules, Dedicated to You and Stryker Phd—second, third and sixth-place finishers in the Grade 3 Longacres Mile.
Mach One Rules could clinch Horse of the Meeting honors with a victory, as the 4-year-old Harbor the Gold gelding is 2-2-1 in five starts with two stakes wins and $108,225 in purses at the meet.
The Muckleshoot Tribal Classic is likely to be Stryker Phd’s final career start. The 8-year-old Bertrando gelding is among the top runners in state history—the only two-time Longacres Mile winner at Emerald Downs, and already has a record three victories in the Muckleshoot Tribal Classic. His overall record is 11-5-7 in 33 starts with $631,011 in earnings.
Citizen Kitty, also in the hunt for Horse of the Meeting, aims for her fourth stakes victory this season in the Filly & Mare Stakes at 1 1/16 miles. The 5-year-old Proud Citizen mare comes off a 1 ½-length victory in last week’s $65,000 Emerald Distaff.
The Juvenile Colts & Gelding Stakes drew a healthy 15 nominations led by the top three finishers in the August 6 WTBOA Lads Stakes—Elliott Bay, Sippin Fire and Brown Tiger. Boundary Bay, full brother to 2016 Emerald Downs Horse of the Meeting O B Harbor, is expected to invade from Vancouver for the Juvenile Colts & Geldings.
Bella Mia, already a double stakes winner at the meet, tops 10 nominees to the Juvenile Filly Stakes.
Entries will be drawn Thursday at the Quarter Chute Café with horses allowed to enter only one race.
