HE’S NOT TALKING CAPTURES WA CUP JUVENILE COLTS & GELDINGS

AUBURN, Wash. (Aug. 25, 2024) – He’s Not Talking gained command into the lane and held off betting favorite Impassable for a half-length victory in Sunday’s $50,000 Washington Cup Juvenile Colts & Geldings at Emerald Downs.

Ridden by Juan Gutierrez at 120 lbs., He’s Not Talking covered 6 ½ furlongs in 1:16.50 on a fast track and paid $9.28 as the second betting choice in the field of eight state-bred 2-year-olds. Bonnie Jenne is the winning trainer for owners Doug and Nancy McPhee of Maple Valley, Wash.

A $52,000 yearling by Brody’s Cause out of 2019 Emerald Downs Champion Filly or Mare No Talking Back, He’s Not Talking earned $27,500 for his maiden victory, pushing his earnings to $33,530. In his previous two starts, he finished sixth in the King County Stakes and second beaten a head in a maiden special weight.

Impassable, ridden by Javier Matias at 120 lbs., rallied wide into the lane, pulled within a head of the winner in mid-stretch but was outfinished in the final 70 yards.

The result was half of a frustrating afternoon for freshmen stallion Barkley, who in addition to Impassable also sired WA Cup Juvenile Fillies runner-up Beauty Bark.

Big Bowie, ridden by Isaias Enriquez, was 3 ½ lengths back in third place, marking his third straight third-place finish in a stakes at Emerald Downs. Rounding out the order of finish were Tiz Grazen, Fortyshadesoftiger, Verdi, Vivacious Tribute, and Da Smoke.

Precise Timing (No. 1) battles stablemate Beauty Bark

PRECISE TIMING PREVAILS IN WA CUP JUVENILE FILLIES

In the $50,000 Washington Cup Juvenile Fillies, Precise Timing held off stablemate Beauty Bark in a driving finish for a nose victory in 1:17.18 for 6 ½ furlongs.

With Kevin Orozco aboard at 121 lbs., Precise Timing remained perfect with three victories in three starts—all stakes—and but clinching honors as the track’s champion 2-year-old filly of 2024. Trained by Kay Cooper for Debbie Pabst’s Blue Ribbon Racing #23, the winner paid $3.40 as the odds-on choice.

A Washington-bred by Dialed In-Peaceful Nation, Precise Timing has won the Angie C Stakes at 5 ½ furlongs and the WTBOA Lassies Stakes and Washington Cup Juvenile Fillies, both at 6 ½ furlongs.

Sunday’s first prize was $27,500, boosting her overall earnings to $90,750.

Breaking cleanly from the from the No. 1 post, Precise Timing set fractions of :22.58, :45.73, and 1:10.70, with Beauty Bark virtually on her hip the entire way. The two Cooper-trained fillies straightened into the lane side by side, with Precise Timing digging in to get the nod.

“They both ran a helluva race down the lane,” Orozco said in the winner’s circle interview. “(Beauty Bark) was trying to get by me, but my horse kicked in.”

Beauty Bark, the 6 to 5 second choice ridden by Isaias Enriquez at 120 lbs., proved her mettle Sunday in stakes company. Coming off a strong 4 ½-length victory in her debut two weeks ago, the daughter of Barkley hooked her stablemate the length of the stretch and dropped a tough decision.

It was 11 ½ lengths back to third-place finisher Dynamic Dee Dee with Lani’s Sweetheart and Dynamic Fire rounding out the order of finish.

Cooper said taking on the boys in the Sept. 15 Gottstein Futurity is a possibility for both Precise Timing and Beauty Bark.

Orozco now has 24 stakes wins at Emerald Downs, good for No. 9 all-time.
