ARCTIC BREEZE RALLIES IN SATURDAY FEATURE
AUBURN, Wash. (Sept. 14, 2024) – Arctic Breeze finished with a flourish and scored a four-length victory in Saturday’s $25,500 allowance feature for fillies and mares at rainy Emerald Downs.
Ridden by Karlo Lopez, the winner overhauled Young Life Laura past mid-stretch and drew off for a convincing victory, running the mile in 1:35.40 on a wet-fast track and paying $6.08 as the slight betting choice in the field of five. Blaine Wright is the winning trainer for Peter Redekop B.C. Ltd.
Last seen winning the Kent Stakes two months ago, Arctic Breeze improved to 4-2-2 in 12 starts with earnings of $94,445. A Kentucky-bred by Arrogate, her 2024 record is 4-0-1 from seven starts with earnings of $76,785.
Young Life Laura, ridden by Carlos Montalvo, swept past Frisco Frills and took the lead into the lane, but was outfinished by Arctic Breeze and settled for second.
James Inheritance, the 2 to 1 second choice ridden by Allyssa Morales, was four lengths back in third with Frisco Frills and Victoria’s Charge rounding out the order of finish. Ropers N Wranglers was a late scratch.
FINAL TWO RACES CANCELLED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER
Races 7 and 8 on Saturday’s eight-race card were called off due to heavy rainfall throughout the Auburn area causing potentially hazardous conditions on the racing surface. The forecast for Sunday’s closing day program is favorable with a high of 67 degrees and only a slight chance of light rain.
NOTES: Closing weekend always means awards galore at Emerald Downs. . . Saturday’s second race—Pony Riders Appreciation Purse—recognized the significant season long contribution from the guys and gals who pony horses from the paddock to the starting gate, with special prizes to the best turned out ponies and gift cards for all participants. Shawna Chistian and Brad took the $300 first prize with Kyrie Patino and Its Allabout Jerry getting second prize including a bag of grooming supplies. . .And following the sixth race, Emerald Downs presented the 2024 Martin Durkan Award to trainers Miguel Hernandez and Anne Wisdom for cooperation and sportsmanship on and off the track as selected by the office of the racing secretary, and jockey Luis Reyes received the 2024 Lindy Award as voted by his fellow riders for sportsmanship and accomplishment in the 2024 meeting. . .In another presentation, Manuel Americano was recognized as the track’s top apprentice rider of 2024. . .With a victory by Vilified ($3.98) in race six, Justin Evans became just the sixth trainer in Emerald Downs history to post a 60-win season. . .Kevin Orozco and Karlo Lopez each rode two winners on the abbreviated card. . .In addition to Arctic Breeze winning the Emerald Downs feature, Peter Redekop took Saturday’s $125,000 British Columbia Derby with August Rain ($3.70) at Hastings Racecourse. Emerald Downs shipper Tougherthantherest finished fourth. . .Sunday is closing day with 11 races featuring the Gottstein Futurity and two Washington Cup events. First post 1:30 p.m.
