$100,000 LONGACRES MILE & $40,000 EMERALD DISTAFF ANALYSIS
Anothertwistafate
$100,000 Longacres Mile (G3) (Thursday, Sept 10, Race 8, 8:30 pm): The 85th Mile features a good horse returning from a 16-month layoff as the 8 to 5 choice. Anothertwistafate misfired in the Preakness but displayed considerable talent in the run up to the 2019 Triple Crown and is too good for this cast if ready off the bench. Trainer Blaine Wright and owner Peter Redekop, second the last two years with Alert Bay and Anyportinastorm, appear set to get their first victory in the Northwest’s biggest race. If not the favorite, then who? Papa’s Golden Boy is extremely quick and likely to be leading at the quarter pole. There is other speed in the race, and while Papa might not get eight furlongs his presence will keep everybody on their toes. Go with him early and you’re likely toast. Canadian shippers Five Star General and He’s the Reason, both owned and trained by Glen Todd, are talented and appear set for top efforts. Mario Gutierrez rides Five Star General and is two for two in the Longacres Mile. Elliott Bay is the top local threat and his trainer, owners and jockey are enjoying dream seasons at Emerald Downs. Elliott Bay has routed well previously and worked a scorching five furlongs last week. Take Charge Deputy ran well in both sprints and is three for six at a mile. The Press is a stakes winner at a mile and his trainer has won the Longacres Mile three times in the last 12 years. Makah Lane also has a route stakes victory on his resume at Emerald Downs, but must rebound from a subpar showing in the Mt. Rainier. La Waun is a hard-trying gelding with a 7 for 16 record on dirt, but is stepping way up in class and marooned in the 10-hole. Hollywood Heat produced a meet-high $105.60 win mutuel vs. allowance foes, but this is a tough assignment for his first try in a route.
Killarney Lass
$40,000 Emerald Distaff, 3&UP, F&M, 1 1/16 Mile (Thursday, Sept 10, Race 7, 7:52 pm): The seven-horse field features five runners exiting the $40,000 Boeing Stakes, which Killarney Lass won by 5 lengths in a season best 1:14.74 for 6 1/2 furlongs. In 17 career starts she has seven wins and zero seconds, so she is pretty much all or nothing–her last three wins at Emerald Downs were by 18 1/4, 9 1/4 and 5 lengths. A mile and a sixteenth appears well within her reach, and she again appears to have no serious pace competition. Alittlelesstalk is a hard-hitting filly who got no help up front in the Boeing, yet easily held second place. She gives you your money’s worth every time. Dontkissntell drew inside the favorite and might have enough speed to make things interesting early. She has run some big races around two turns. The two shippers are both interesting. Amazonian stretches out after a lackluster sixth in her 2020 debut last month in Vancouver. The 2019 BC Oaks winner adds Mario Gutierrez and appears to be training well for this assignment. Reginella won this race in 2018 and has been running well in the upper claiming ranks at Golden Gate.
