Emerald Downs News & Notes-Tuesday, July 7

WEEK 3 FEATURES 10 RACES WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY

Entries remain strong as Emerald Downs strides into week three of the 2020 meet, with 10-race programs at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday and 5 p.m. Thursday. An aggregate 153 horses—7.65 per race—are entered over the two days, upping the season total to 457 runners in six days, or 7.61 per race.

FEATURE RACES WEEK 3:

Owners’ Prestige

Wednesday, July 8, Race 9 (6:28 p.m.), $10,000 claiming, 3YO & Up, 6F: Speed absolutely dominated last Thursday, with gate to wire winners in all eight sprints on the card. Even if that continues, this open $10K claimer is puzzling. Owners’ Prestige, So Lucky and Cody’s Choice all have high early speed, as does Swingshift Deputy, who began his career here with three wins in 2015-16 but has been running in turf sprints down south. Owners’ Prestige scored gate to wire off the bench in 2018 and 2019, but he faces all kinds of pace pressure in this one. Prestige beat a tough group while earning an 82 Beyer in last year’s season debut. La Waun drops after a rough trip as the betting favorite at a higher-level opening day. He finished in the exacta 8 of 12 last year and could get the right trip today.

Guardian One

Thursday, July 9, Race 9, (9:07 p.m.) $20,000 claiming (WA-Bred $25,000), F&M 3YO & Up, 6F: Trainer Chris Stenslie was on fire last week and has another good chance for a victory here. Guardian One is a hard-hitting veteran capable of winning short and long, but she was dealt some tough hands last year while consistently facing the likes of No Talking Back and Paddy’s Secret. Her versatility is aided by a nice outside post. Sunshine Emily is fast and hails from the powerhouse Frank Lucarelli outfit, but this is her first start in a year and her first vs. older fillies and mares. Although she tailed off last year, Jerre to Carrie has eight wins at Emerald Downs and is 6 for 11 at the distance.
