Total entries for Week 8 are 182 horses in 22 races or 8.2 a race. Entries for 19 Thoroughbred races are 160 horses or 8.4 per race.

Cm Boom Shakalaka

$40,000 Bank of America Emerald Downs Championship Challenge, 3-year-olds & up Quarter Horses, 440 Yards (Thursday, August 20, Race 3, 5:59 p.m.): Trainer Nick Lowe and owner Chris Sutton have the morning line favorite in all three stakes including Cm Boom Shakalaka, third in this race last year as the 6 to 5 favorite. Sharp in a pair of wins this summer at Grants Pass, Cm Boom Shakalaka is two for three locally including a victory in the 2017 Juvenile Challenge. One Flyin Foose attempts to become the third 3-year-old and only the second filly to win this race. She lost all chance at the break when favored in the Grants Pass Derby, but she looked good winning four straight including a pair of stakes. Kool Odds is the defending champion and also finished second two years ago, but he lost three straight this year in Idaho and is winless since scoring here last year.

Louisana Bunny

$30,000 John Deere Emerald Downs Juvenile Challenge, 2-year-old Quarter Horses, 350 Yards (Thursday, August 20, Race 2, 5:30 p.m.): Lowe and Sutton have a dynamite hand with morning line favorites Cm Dillingham Advice and Louisana Bunny. Cm Dillingham Advice was the fastest qualifier for the $60,000 Firecracker Futurity last month at Grants Pass, but missed the race which stablemate Louisana Bunny won at odds of 17 to 1. Skyywalker, fourth in the Firecracker, and Coopers Best Card, who beat Louisana Bunny in the trials, also are contenders.

Cm Once Ina Bluemoon

$20,000 Emerald Downs Distance Challenge, 3-year-olds & up Quarter Horses, 870 Yards (Thursday, August 20, Race 1, 5:00 p.m.): Cm Once Ina Bluemoon romped by 3 ¼ lengths last year and comes off a dominating score at Grants Pass. The versatile 5-year-old Oregon-bred is 2 for 2 at Emerald Downs and will be odds on vs. this crew. Hes a Bugin is 13 for 37 lifetime and gave the top choice a good tussle when last seen 13 months ago. Heza Gamer misfired in his 2020 debut but is effective at 870 yards including a second in this race a year ago.
