STAKES GALORE THIS SUNDAY AT EMERALD DOWNS
The 86th Mile is in the books but still plenty of stakes action remaining this season at Emerald Downs. Sunday, for example, is the single busiest stakes day of the season with four big-money races on the 10-race card.
In addition to the $50,000 WTBOA Lads Stakes for 2-year-old colts & geldings and $50,000 Barbara Shinpoch Stakes for 2-year-old fillies, Sunday also highlights Quarter Horses with the $40,000 Bank of America Emerald Championship Challenge for older horses and $30,000 John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship for 2-year-olds.
Cobra Jet
Cobra Jet (2-2-0-0-$38,715) heads a field of seven in the WTBOA Lads at 6 1/2 furlongs. Unbeaten in two starts for trainer Frank Lucarelli, the Curlin to Mischief gelding faces several promising juveniles including recent maiden special weight winners A View From Above, Check the Gear and Decimate, the latter a $5,000 supplemental nomination for owner/trainer Howard Belvoir. Akasi and Smiling Salsa, second and third in the Angie C Stakes, are among nine fillies entered in the Barbara Shinpoch at 6 1/2 furlongs. Gold N Glitter, 9 1/2-length maiden winner last month, attempts to give Lucarelli his second straight victory in the Shinpoch.
Cm Boom Shakalaka
Cm Boom Shakalaka (33-14-4-3-$188,436) bids to become the first repeat winner of the Bank of America Emerald Championship Challenge at 440 yards. The Nick Lowe-trained 6-year-old has a 3-1-0 record in four starts at 440 yards, but faces eight tough rivals including Sables Dashin and Dr Tool. Apolinaria Prize figures to be favored in the John Deere Juvenile Challenge at 350 yards. A close third in the $90,000 Firecracker Futurity at Grants Pass Downs in July, the California-bred filly logged the fastest qualifying time of :18.31 for the John Deere Juvenile Challenge.
