MILE WINNER BARKLEY RESUMES TRAINING

Longacres Mile champion Barkley returned to the track Thursday, his first spin around the oval since Sunday’s heart-pounding victory over Alert Bay in the 83rd renewal of the Northwest’s top race.

Trainer Howard Belvoir said Barkley appears to have come out of the race in good shape, and is undecided on whether the 5-year-old will race again in 2018.

“We’ll train him and see how he is, but he seems to have come back good,” Belvoir said.

Owned by Rising Star Stable III and ridden by Javier Matias, Barkley ran the mile in 1:34.93 and equaled his career top with a 94 Beyer. Second choice in the wagering at 5/2, Barkley out-finished 9/5 favorite Alert Bay in a strong stretch run to earn $108,900 for the 18-member syndicate.

Belvoir now has three Longacres Mile wins—Wasserman (2008), Assessment (2009) and Barkley—and tied the late Jim Penney for most Mile wins at Emerald Downs. Belvoir, 74, said Barkley’s victory was his favorite of the three.

“They’re all great, but (Barkley) I rate this one the best,” Belvoir said.

A Kentucky-bred by Munnings, Barkley is ineligible for the $50,000 Muckleshoot Tribal Classic on September 9, which leaves either the $25,000 Pete Pedersen Overnight Stakes on September 23 or the $100,000 British Columbia Premiers (G3C) on October 8 as local options. The Pedersen is six furlongs while the BC Premiers is 1 3/8 miles at Hastings Racecourse.

Belvoir now has trained three of the top six earners in Emerald Downs’ history: Wasserman $575,024 (No. 1), Assessment $472,744 (No. 3) and Barkley $351,800 (No. 6).

  • There are nine stakes remaining in the 2018 season including six Washington Cup races. The season ends September 23 with a stakes double-header featuring the $50,000 Gottstein Futurity for 2-year-old and $100,000 Getaway Stakes for 3-year-olds.
