ALEX CRUZ ON PACE FOR RIDING RECORD
With at least one victory this Wednesday and Thursday, Alex Cruz would establish an Emerald Downs’ record for most consecutive winning days by a jockey.
Cruz enters the week with 29 consecutive winning days, one shy of Kevin Radke’s record of 30 straight winning days in 2003. Cruz is scheduled to ride all 18 races this week—eight Wednesday, 10 Thursday—in pursuit of the mark.
A 28-year-old native of Carolina, Puerto Rico, Cruz captured the 2020 Emerald Downs’ riding title with 72 wins in 38 days. He is 58 for 264 (21.96 percent) during the streak which began August 6 with victories on Guardingthemoney and Doctor Bruce S.
WEEK 3 FEATURE RACES
Wednesday, June 2, Race 5 (7:51 p.m.) $23,100 allowance/optional claiming, 3YO & Up, 5 ½ furlongs: Speed horse fared well last week and Papa’s Golden Boy is as fast as they come. Papa tailed off late last season but the now 5-year-old gelding has some dazzling drills leading into his 2021 debut. Oh Marvelous Me, now trained by Sharon Ross, is 9 for 24 at Emerald Downs against top competition and finished 2020 on a roll. Windribbon fired all five starts last year and is two for three at this distance. Catfish Hunter also is a capable sprinter but finished behind Oh Marvelous Me and Windribbon in his final two starts of 2020. Take Charge Deputy is just 1 for 9 locally, but the victory was at 5 1/2 furlongs against six-time stakes winner Barkley. Collusiionist is new to Emerald Downs but the 5-year-old Colorado-bred won a pair of restricted stakes last year and is three for three at the distance. Deep field.
Thursday, June 3, Race 4, (7:08 p.m.) $20,900 allowance, 3YO & Up Fillies & Mares, 5 ½ furlongs: For You Only gets class relief in this allowance dash for fillies and mares. A stakes winner at age 2, For You Only finished second four times last year and a good third to Daffodil Sweet in her 2021 debut two weeks ago. For You Only won the 2019 Angie C Stakes at this distance. You Go Girl is the lone two-time winner in the field although both victories were against slightly softer competition. Madigan Squeeze and Tothemoonandback are talented 3-year-olds making their first start vs. winners. The former blitzed $15,000 maiden claimers in good time on opening day, the latter scored determinedly in her debut last fall. In Race 8, Mike Man’s Gold goes for his record 25th Emerald Downs’ victory in an open $5,000 claimer at six furlongs. The 11-year-old gelding surprisingly hasn’t been a betting favorite since July 20, 2019, a span of 16 starts.
