WEEK 5 FEATURE RACES

Baja Sur

$50,000 Budweiser Stakes (3YO & UP, 6 F) Thursday, June 17, Race 7 (8:37 pm): Four stakes this week, two each Thursday and Sunday. The Budweiser features the return of 2019 Washington Horse of the Year Baja Sur, a top-tier sprinter who is unbeaten in four career starts at Emerald Downs. Papa’s Golden Boy routinely runs half-miles in :43 and change and delivered  a sparkling 2021 debut, running 5 1/2 furlongs in a meet-best 1:02.11. Papa’s Golden Boy drew the No. 1 post, which is a combined 13 for 51 at 5 and 5 1/2 furlongs but just 1 for 16 at 6 furlongs this season. Baja Sur and stable mate Windribbon figure to be closest to Papa’s Golden Boy into the stretch. Unmachable finished second and fourth in two starts this spring at Turf Paradise, but is 4-2-1 in seven races at Emerald Downs including a stakes victory last year at 6 1/2 furlongs. Unmachabe should get a lively pace to enhance his stretch kick. Take Charge Deputy returns from a nine-month layoff with some sharp works and came off the bench to defeat Barkley at 24 to 1 a year ago. Muncey fires every time and scored convincingly in his first start as a 4-year-old. Returray and Once On Whiskey are new to Emerald Downs and might want longer distances. The older horse series continues with the $50,000 Governor’s Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs on Sunday, July 11, and the $100,000 Longacres Mile (G3) on Sunday, Aug. 15.

Daffodil Sweet

$50,000 Hastings Stakes (3YO & UP F&M, 6F) Thursday, June 17, Race 6 (8:11 pm): Daffodil Sweet is unbeaten and virtually untested in four sprints to date, but this marks her first stakes race vs. older horses. She aired vs. allowance foes last month and worked a bullet five furlongs last week. Coco Bee is a quality 6-year-old with a 7 for 14 record and nearly $200,000 in earnings racing exclusively at Golden Gate Fields. This is her first race on dirt, but her dam (Hope I Do) won twice at Emerald Downs. Ima Happy Cat won this race in 2019 and could complicate matters for Daffodil Sweet on the lead. Ima Happy Cat sizzled five furlongs in a bullet :57 1/5 here last Thursday. Killarney Lass has won stakes going short and routing and a handful when on her game. Dontkissntell is versatile and had a troubled trip in her 2021 debut. Uno Trouble Maker is stepping up in class, but she has 10 wins at 6 furlongs and over $227,000 in earnings. Squan’s Kingdom ran well in her first appearance at Emerald Downs and tops the field in career earnings. Cascade Dancer is 2 for 3 lifetime including a nice allowance score two weeks ago.
