WEEK 8 FEATURE RACES

Papa’s Golden Boy

$50,000 Governor’s Stakes nominations, Sunday, July 11, 6 ½ Furlongs (3-year-olds & up): Baja Sur, Collusionist, Muncey, Papa’s Golden Boy, Unmachable, Windribbon. Entries taken Wednesday, July 7Papa’s Golden Boy and Baja Sur meet at 6 1/2 panels, a rematch of the June 17 Budweiser Stakes which was taken gate to wire by Papa’s Golden Boy in 1:07.71 for 6 furlongs (90 Beyer). Windribbon could be a key to the race. A late scratch June 2 and June 17, the 5-year-old gelding finally ran June 30, posting a booming allowance victory in 1:07.53 for 6 furlongs (83 Beyer). If Windribbon runs, it would only be 11 days between starts. Baja Sur ran fine in the Budweiser, but race shape was not in his favor, and an extra half-furlong helps his cause. Unmachable won a stakes at this distance as a 3-year-old, but needs to up his game to contend Sunday.

Ima Happy Cat

$50,000 Washington State Legislators Stakes nominations, Sunday, July 11, 6 ½ Furlongs (3-year-olds & up fillies & mares): Coco Bee, Daffodil Sweet, Dontkissntell, Eyes Open, Gettin Sideways, Ima Happy Cat, Killarney Lass, Miss Important, Squan’s Kingdom. Entries taken Wednesday, July 7In the Hastings Stakes three weeks ago, Daffodil Sweet missed the break at 4 to 5  and Ima Happy Cat sailed uncontested gate to wire for her third Emerald Downs stakes victory. Daffodil Sweet and Ima Happy Cat both show good works leading into Sunday’s race, and the early pace could be hot and heavy. Coco Bee is better than her fourth in the Hastings and 6 ½ could be a good fit for the consistent 6-year-old mare. Killarney Lass is learning how to rate behind horses and has excelled at this distance including a 5-length blowout in the 2020 Boeing Stakes. Squan’s Kingdom overcame trouble to finish second in the Hastings and has hit the board in her last 11 starts.
