SOPHOMORES IN SPOTLIGHT THIS WEEK AT EMERALD DOWNS
Daffodil Sweet
Sophomores take center stage as Emerald Downs moves into Week 10 of the 50-day meeting. Sunday’s card features 3-year-old colts and geldings in the $50,000 Irish Day Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs and 3-year-old fillies in the $50,000 Kent Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs. Auburn Stakes winner Top Executive and 2020 Horse of the Meeting Dutton headline 12 nominees to the Irish Day while Ms Lynn and Camden High, first and second at 17 to 1 and 21 to 1 in the Seattle Stakes, top 11 nominees to the Kent. Saturday’s twilight card features a pair of $24,750 allowance tests at one mile–one for older horses and one for older fillies and mares. Multiple stakes winner Daffodil Sweet (pictured) is 6 to 5 in the older fillies and mares race while multiple stakes winner Unmachable is 6 to 5 in the older horse test.

NOTES: Leslie Mawing, No. 4 all-time with 761 wins at Emerald Downs, is named to ride three horses here this week. Mawing has been riding at Canterbury Park but rode here the tail end of last season and won on 17 of 86 mounts. . .Three-time Emerald Downs riding champion Rocco Bowen is currently tied for fourth with 21 wins at Arlington Park. . .John Lindley, longtime publisher of Parker’s tip sheet at Emerald Downs, enjoyed a great weekend of racing. Lindley and co-owner Ray Morton won a $20,350 maiden special weight with Temple Secret at Emerald Downs and finished second with Majestic Eagle in the $85,000 Wickerr Stakes on turf at Del Mar. . .Don’t look now but two-time defending training champion Frank Lucarelli suddenly is contending for another title. Just 3 for 51 on July 3, Lucarelli has won with nine of his last 26 starters and has zoomed into a second-place tie with Vince Gibson at 12 wins apiece, four back of Joe Toye.
