$50,000 COCA-COLA STAKES TESTS SOPHOMORES
AUBURN, Wash. (May 28, 2017) – Eleven 3-year-old colts and geldings have been nominated to the $50,000 Coca-Cola Stakes for 3-year-old colts and geldings at Emerald Downs.
At 6 ½ furlongs, the Coca-Cola is round two for 3-year-olds en route to the $75,000 Emerald Downs Derby on Sunday, July 30. Round one produced some fireworks as Sharkzilla rallied from last to score a $37 upset in the Auburn Stakes, running six furlongs in 1:08.92 and overhauling So Lucky late for the victory.
The Coca-Cola is the final sprint of the series, which proceeds July 2 with the $50,000 Seattle Slew Stakes at one mile, followed four weeks later by the Emerald Downs Derby at 1 1/8 miles.
Riser is an interesting new shooter for trainer Blaine Wright. A Mizzen Mast colt, Riser blitzed allowance foes by seven lengths here on May 6, running 5 ½ furlongs in 1:02.52 and earning an 86 Beyer. Riser was tried in tough company last year, competing in a pair of stakes at Golden Gate Fields and one at Santa Anita.
