Washington-bred runner Snackbasket had a productive racing career over six Emerald Downs seasons and he now thrives in a second career with Braiden Ludtka of Issaquah.

Snackbasket in 2000 with Juan Gutierrez aboad in Juan's first EmD win.

Using excellent stalking speed, Snackbasket won four times at EmD for trainers Larry and Sharon Ross. At retirement, a new home was sought with the help of Katie Merwick of Second Chance Ranch. Horse-lover Ludtka was 12 years old in 2006 when Snackbasket joined the family and together they’ve grown in horse-event fields.

“I thought he could become a pony around the track but he was just too much racehorse,” said Sharon Ross.

“He had a reputation of being a rogue at the track,” Merwick said. “Some thought I was crazy giving her to a 12-year old girl but she’s the only one who can catch him the pasture.  He just runs up to her, whinnying.”

Ludtka and Snackbasket have become fast friends, Ludtka having her senior pictures from Issaquah High School taken with her equine friend.  Together they perform in show jumping, dressage and cross-country events.

Now 17, his performance name is Just By Chance.

“He’s definitely my best friend, he’s an awesome horse,” said Braiden Ludtka.
