We’ve seen him here since June 3, 2001, when he rallied to win his career debut at odds of 10-to-1. Over the next decade West Seattle Boy would win another 20 races at Emerald Downs and retire as the track’s all-time leader with 21 wins, going out with a bang by winning three races as an 11-year-old in 2010 and three more as a 12-year-old in 2011.
On Saturday, June 30, Emerald Downs will honor the remarkable gelding, along with trainer Rigoberto Velasquez and owners Lisa Baze and Jerry Carmody, with a slew of retirement activities including appearances by West Seattle Boy at Emerald AM and in the winner’s circle before a race named in his honor: the West Seattle Boy Classic.
Although he’s finished racing, West Seattle Boy remains at Emerald Downs where Velasquez and Baze are transitioning the 13-year-old gelding into a pony horse. His new routine includes ponying horses to the track during training hours and, eventually, horses to the starting gate for races. According to Baze, West Seattle Boy retired sound and is a quick study at his new job.

"Like everything else he's done, he's ready for this," Baze said. "I can't believe how lucky I was to have him. He's one in a lifetime.'
