Tex X.
Washington-bred gelding (b. 2003)
By Slewdledo-Nifty Purchase
Career (2005-2008): 23-2-4-7, $36,322

In the Thoroughbred-racing arena, Tex X. was a fine competitor-he finished first, second or third in 13-of-23 starts. However, in chuckwagon racing, the Slewdledo gelding has been a superstar.

In fact, owner/driver Mark Sutherland said Tex X. is a natural in his second career.

"He became an immediate addition to my A string," said Sutherland, the 2010 Dodge Tour Champion. "He's been a good addition and a great horse, and I'm sure glad to own him."

Chuckwagon racing, popular in Western Canada, involves a driver and four-horse teams pulling a chuckwagon. In just a short while, Tex X. has already made a name for himself, earning honors as the 2011 Equine Outfit of Excellence Champion Left Wheeler.

As a grandson to the Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, Tex X. was bred to be a champion, but few expected that his excellence would be achieved in chuckwagon racing. Tex X. was bred and first owned by Roy Dane, who was instrumental in bringing the prolific sire Slewdledo to this state. Of all people, Sutherland has felt the influence of Tex X.'s brilliant pedigree.

"He's been an impact horse since the first year," Sutherland said. "He's a noticeable horse. He's a big, fit, good-looking gray and everybody likes a gray horse."

Tex X. began his Thoroughbred-racing career in 2005 with trainer Tim McCanna at Emerald Downs. The gelding was claimed twice during his career and broke his maiden with Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer at Bay Meadows. Tex X. finished his career with McCanna in 2008, and although winless in eight starts, he had two seconds and three thirds and earned checks in all but one of those starts.

"We tried hard to get a win out of him but he ran a lot of seconds and thirds." McCanna said. "The chuckwagon guys from Canada were really after him so we got a good price for him at the end of his career. We sold him for more than he was running for, I do remember that."
