ROYAL MOSES RALLIES PAST GOOD FIELD,
    CAMP GRANADA EDGES POLISH DOLLAR

AUBURN, Wash. (July 20, 2013) – Royal Moses exploded through the stretch and notched a 10-to-1 upset over Perfect Pie in Saturday’s $18,900 feature race for fillies and mares at Emerald Downs.

Ridden by Javier Matias, Royal Moses ran six furlongs in 1:09.38 and paid $22, $6.60 and $5.80. Tim Harder is the trainer for Squatting Dog Stable and Rusty Warwick.

A 4-year-old Washington-bred by Cahill Road-Miss Wagon Lode, Royal Moses consistently fires big stretch finishes but had run three straight seconds before Saturday’s victory. Her overall record is 3-8-0 in 15 starts with earnings of $97,892.

Perfect Pie, ridden by Jennifer Whitaker, finished three quarters-of-a-length behind the winner and paid $10 and $6.60.

River of Aces held third and paid $4. For trainer Charles Essex, the third-place finish broke his streak of six consecutive days with at least one victory. But Essex and River of Aces went down swinging, as the lightning-quick filly led through splits of :22.17, :44.86 and :56.93, finally yielding the lead in the final sixteenth.

Cielator, the 2-to-1 betting favorite, had a rough trip, finishing in sixth place.

In the eighth race, a $21,000 sprint for older optional claimers, Camp Granada ($8.60) held off Polish Dollar in a desperate finish for a head victory in 1:15.25 for 6 ½ furlongs. David G. Lopez rode the winner for trainer Frank Lucarelli and owner/breeder Ron Crockett Inc.

A 5-year-old Kentucky-bred gelding by Forest Camp–Pleas Write, Camp Granada is 3-2-0 in seven career starts with earnings of $40,250. The outcome made amends for two defeats to Polish Dollar earlier at the meet—but it wasn’t easy.

Polish Dollar resisted gamely from the inside, refusing to fold after losing the lead, and made one final surge in the final strides to miss by a head. Nevertheless, the 7-year-old gelding is 13-for-33 lifetime and 3-1-1 in five starts at the meet for trainer Robert Meeking.

Rocky’s Quest, the 9-to-10 betting, finished a half-length back in third place.

Jockey Maggie Hardison receives a cold shower after winning her first career race.

HARDSION BREAKS THE ICE IN NIGHTCAP

Apprentice jockey Maggie Hardison scored her maiden victory Saturday aboard 20-to-1 Come On Cozzene in the 10th race finale for trainer/co-owner Arturo Arboleda. A 29-year-old Californian who earned a degree in Psychology at Auburn University, Hardison’s victory came in her 31st career mount.

NOTES: The $0.50 Pick 5 carryover to Saturday is $4,537.30…The 4-year-old Washington-bred gelding I Keep Saying ($6.40) kept on rolling with a one-length victory over Belt in race seven, an $18,900 optional claimer for 3-year-olds and up. Ridden by Eliska Kubinova for trainer Jim Penney and owner/breeder Homestretch Farm, I Keep Saying ran 6 ½ furlongs in 1:15.80 and has finished first in all four starts at the meet, including a DQ to second on April 27…Jockey Lorenzo Lopez and trainer Juan Sanguino swept the early daily double, winning the 870-yard opener with Cascade Dynamite ($9) and the 350-yard second race with Rf Pistol Pete ($5.20), the latter becoming the first Quarter Horse with two wins at the meet. The victories moved Sanguino atop the Quarter Horse trainers’ standings with four wins, and Lopez into a first-place tie with Debbie Hoonan in the Quarter Horse jockeys’ standings with three wins apiece…Congratulations to trainer John Holmes for his first win of the meet, as First Last Chance ($4) rallied to score under Jose Zunino in race four…Live racing continues Sunday with first post 2:15 p.m. The $50,000 Mt. Rainier Handicap goes as race nine at 6:24 p.m., with six 3-year-olds and up racing 1 1/16 miles in the final local prep for the $200,000 Longacres Mile (G3). Southern California shipper Tres Borrachos is the 8-to-5 morning line favorite, and Hastings Racecourse flash Herbie D the 3-to-1 second choice…Trainer Vann Belvoir made it two wins in two days as Washington-bred Somewhere With You ($18.80) scored in Saturday’s Del Mar nightcap for owner/breeder Coal Creek Farm.
