    SEATTLE HANDICAP

    3-YEAR-OLD FILLIES

    75th RUNNING, MAY 26, 2013

    6-½ FURLONGS IN 1:14.41

JOCKEY ROCCO BOWEN, STOPSHOPPINGDEBBIE, WINNER: “I was pretty pumped about a week ago when Tom (Wenzel) gave me the call on the horse. The plan was to play it by the break. With the break, you can win or lose a race. When I saw my stable mate come inside of me, I just tried to ride a smart race. I really didn’t want to put pressure on my stable mate and set it up for someone else. I just tried to get my filly to relax and hope that she had the kick at the end, and she sure did. I just wanted ride smart race, and I got the job done.”

JOCKEY JUAN GUTIERREZ, GOIN TO THE WINDOW, SECOND: “I was happy with her race today. She got a little too excited on the backside. I wanted her to relax, but I wasn’t going to fight her. At the quarter-pole, I still thought I had the horse. She still had a lot left, but the other horse is a nice filly too. I think my filly will be pretty tough going long, but we’ll see.”

TRAINER TOM WENZEL, STOPHSHOPPINGDEBBIE, WINNER; GOIN TO THE WINDOW, SECOND; BLUEBERRY SMOOTHIE, THIRD:

“We thought that Stopshoppingdebbie was possibly the quickest. I wanted Juan (Gutierrez) and Javier (Matias) to sit off it with their horses, but not be too far back. Unfortunately, Juan said that his filly was dragging him. I was hoping Goin to the Window wouldn’t engage until the quarter-pole just so maybe she would have more for the finish. I was still happy with her race. I even thought Blueberry Smoothie ran on well late. Stopshoppingdebbie is the kind of horse in the morning that is very intelligent. You can work her a half-mile in 52 seconds or 46. She’s pretty versatile. I take some humility with the results today because of whom each horse is bred by, but you do have to get them ready for the race. I am pretty happy with today’s result.”

NOTES: Stopshoppingdebbie (2-2-0-0-$37,318)…The winning time tied the stakes record held by Exclusive Diva (1:14.58, 2012) and Youcant’takeme (1:14 2/5, 2003)…Northwest Farms LLC (Jerre Paxton) is the first owner to sweep the top three places in an Emerald Downs stakes race (Paxton owns Stopshoppingdebbie and co-owns Goin to the Window and Blueberry Smoothie). Northwest Farms also bred the top three finishers…Combined, Northwest Farms earned $45,000 of the $50,000 purse money…Larry Ross saddled the top four finishers in an overnight stakes races—B. Charlie, Charmonnier, Secret Damascus, Military Hawk in the Washington HBPA Stakes, September 22, 1996—but this is the first time an EmD trainer has finished first, second and third in a stakes worth $25,000 or more…Northwest Farms has a record three wins in this race (Shampoo, 2007; Exclusive Diva, 2012; Stopshoppingdebbie, 2013)…NBA Hall of Famer Lenny Wilkens was on hand for the Seattle Handicap. Coach of the 1979 World Champion Seattle Sonics, Wilkens is a friend of owner I.M. Gorahst (Lasting Rose, Locket)…Next for 3-year-old fillies: $50,000 Irish Day Handicap, one mile, Sunday, June 23.
