    THE HORSES ARE BACK

    LET THE TRAINING BEGIN!

The barn area opened Monday and horses begin training Wednesday as Emerald Downs begins to gear up for its 17th season of live racing. The 81-day meeting opens Friday, April 13, and continues through Sunday, Sept. 23.

Training hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily, and fans can watch the action while enjoying breakfast at the Quarter Chute Café adjacent to the top of the stretch.

Director of Racing Bret Anderson said he expected 250 horses on the grounds for the first day of training, en route to over 1,000 by the start of the season.

Defending Horse of the Meeting Noosa Beach, Emerald Downs’ all-time leader in stakes wins with 11, is expected to be among the early arrivals for trainer Doris Harwood. The now 6-year-old Washington-bred won four-of-five starts in 2011, the only defeat a runner-up to multi-millionaire Awesome Gem in the $200,000 Longacres Mile (G3), and is the only horse to win at least one stakes race in four straight seasons at Emerald Downs. The versatile gelding has victories at seven different distances, and in 2010 won a record five stakes including the 75th running of the Longacres Mile and his first of back-to-back Horse of the Meeting titles.

Trivia question: In the last five season (2007-2011) women trainers have saddled 71 of the 167 stakes winners at Emerald Downs. Can you name the five women trainers who are over 30 percent wins in stakes races during that period (Minimum two wins)?

    Trivia Answer: Bonnie Jenne 40.9% (9-for-22); Connie Bouslaugh 36.3% (4-for-11); Margo Lloyd 33.3% (2-for-6); Chris Stenslie 31.5% (6-for-19); Doris Harwood 30.2% (45-for-149)
