CONSISTENT CLEMENS BROOK PREVAILS
IN FRIDAY FEATURE AT EMERALD DOWNS
AUBURN, Wash. (June 13) – Clemens Brook swept past Once Upon a Song into the stretch and held off Seventyprcentcocoa late for a neck victory in Friday’s $14,800 feature race for older fillies and mares at Emerald Downs.
Ridden by Jennifer Whitaker, Clemens Brook ran six furlongs in 1:09.06 and paid $6.20, $3.60 and $2.80. Rigoberto Velasquez is the winning trainer for owners Inittowinit.
A 7-year-old Washington-bred mare by Petersburg, Clemens Brook is one of the track’s most consistent performers, compiling a 2-2-0 record in four starts this season, and a career mark of 13-9-1 in 31 starts. Friday’s win, worth $8,410, pushed her lifetime bankroll to $83,158.
Seventyprcentcocoa, ridden by Leslie Mawing, closed furiously to finish second and just missed the victory. The runner-up paid $4 and $3.40.
Sweet Jenny, a 10-to-1 long shot ridden by Juan Gutierrez, finished third and paid $4.20. Once Upon a Song, the leader through fractions of :21.81 and :44.18, weakened slightly to finish fourth, and was followed by Miss Communication, Maggie’s Special and Kenzie Carolina.
NOTES: Cha Cha Latte ($4) rallied to win the fourth race for older fillies and mares and joined He’s a Cruiser as the only horses to win four races at the meet. Ridden by Rocco Bowen and trained by Jeff Metz, Cha Cha Latte is 4-0-1 in five starts at the meet and 10-for-23 lifetime. . .Jockey Leonel Camacho-Flores swept the early daily double with wins on Debauch ($10.80) in the first race and Free Beer ($9.80) in the second. . .Jim Penney saddled two winners and jumped into third place in the trainers’ standings with 11 wins.
