Pirates Deputy is a 9-year--old California-bred gelding, but most of his life has been spent in Washington.  He now resides in Duvall, where he is owned and cared for by horse-lover Ashley Colonel, who has taught the former stakes winner a host of new disciplines.

A foal of 2004, Pirates Deputy was acquired at the 2005 Barretts Sale when Sue Villyard and Brennan Tweedy prompted Sue’s late husband, trainer Aubrey Villyard, to submit the winning bid of $6,500. Shipped to Emerald Downs to begin his racing career, Pirates Deputy proved to be a bargain.

A runner-up in the 2006 WTBA Lads was followed by victory in the meeting’s top juvenile race, the Gottstein Futurity.

“Aubrey couldn’t even watch the stretch of the Gottstein,” said Sue Villyard.  “He was so excited and emotional having Pirates Deputy and Wild Cycle in the race.”

That became Aubrey Villyard’s biggest career stakes win and Wild Cycle finished second.

Brennan Tweedy was Pirates Deputy’s co-owner and regular exercise rider, and figured the ex-racer would transition wonderfully into a new role.  She’s been around horses since a very young age and calls the Gottstein win “the biggest thrill of my life.”

His two-year-old season continued and at year’s end he’d earned a total of $386,462.

Currently, he’s mastering dressage, cross-country and stadium jumping.

“He’s had a good life, it’s been fun to be part of that,” said Tweedy.
