JOCKEY LESLIE MAWING, D’HONORABLE ONE, WINNER: “I met with Blaine (Wright) this morning, and we thought there might be some other speed in the race. I didn’t want to fight my horse at all, so he would settle easier. I knew Makors Finale would be tough on the lead. I didn’t want him to get too far ahead of us, so I just paced him from behind. For a split second, I did pass him, but he was game on the lead. I hooked him at the three-eighths pole and it was a horse race from then on. Both Gallyn (Mitchell) and I rode our horses past the wire. We both thought the other had won, but I guess the wire couldn’t separate us.”
JOCKEY GALLYN MITCHELL, MAKORS FINALE, WINNER: “Tom (Wenzel) told me to put the horse on the lead. He was going so easy on the lead, but at about the eighth-pole, Leslie (Mawing) got a head on me. My horse is laid back in the morning, but you get him in company, he’s a different horse. I never really knew if we ever got by the other horse, but coming back (to the winners’ circle), I called it a dead-heat.”
