Aaron the Baron rallies to win Saturday's feature race by 2-1/4 lengths

AARON THE BARON SHARP IN SATURDAY FEATURE

AUBURN, Wash. (June 2, 2012) – Aaron the Baron appears to be an up and coming horse in the older horse handicap division at Emerald Downs.

The lightly raced 5-year-old gelding took another big step forward Saturday in the feature race at Emerald Downs, rallying for a 2-¼ length victory over Showme Yourfriends in the $20,000 allowance/optional claiming race for 3-year-olds and up.

Ridden by Leslie Mawing—his third straight win on the card—Aaron the Baron ran one mile in 1:35.07 and paid $3.40, $2.40 and $2.20. Doris Harwood is the trainer for owner Elttaes Stable (Ken Alhdeff).

Aaron the Baron advanced three deep on the last turn, swept past Amazing Legacy into the stretch, and then drew clear of Showme Yourfriends through the lane.

“He’s got a monster stride and it’s just a matter of me being a passenger and going along for the ride,” Mawing said of the strapping gray gelding.

A California-bred by Tribunal-Silver Screen Girl, Aaron the Baron has compiled a 3-2-2 mark from 10 career starts with earnings of $45,229, including an $11,000 check for Saturday’s triumph. Aaron the Baron also is 2-for-3 in routes and 1-1-1 in three starts at the meeting.

“He’s kind of coming into his own this year,” Harwood said of Aaron the Baron. “I’m really pleased with his training.”

Showme Yourfriends, ridden by William Antongeorgi, finished second and paid $3 and $2.60. It was his first start since being claimed for $20,000 last month by owner Ray McCanna and trainer Tim McCanna.

Amazing Legacy, the early leader ridden by Gallyn Mitchell, held third place but was disqualified and placed fourth for fouling fourth-place finisher National in mid-stretch.

National was promoted from fourth to third place and paid $3.80 to show. El Gran Bebe and Step Aside Clyde completed the order of finish.

NOTES: The consistent 5-year-old mare Up Your Plan ($7.80) improved to 2-2-0 in four starts this season with a nose victory over Angel Unaware in the fifth race. The 5-year-old Washington-bred mare, owned and bred by Larry and Veralene Hillis and trained by Jose Navarro, benefited from a perfectly-timed ride by Juan Gutierrez while winning in :58.21 for five furlongs…Drawing Breath ($3) made it two straight for owners/breeders Dave Bowman and Bob Meeking with a three-length victory in the seventh race. Michael Pollowitz and Jeff Wilson claimed the 3-year-old filly for $4,000, and G.D. Khalsa is the new trainer…Juan Gutierrez rode two winners and leads Eliska Kubinova and Leonel Camacho-Flores by a 26-24 margin in the jockeys’ standings…Mawing’s three wins—his second three win day this season—moved him to sixth place with 20 wins…Nine different trainers saddled winners including Howard Belvoir and Tim McCanna, who rank first and second with 16 and 14 wins respectively…McCanna has had at least one winner on five straight cards…Live racing continues Sunday with a 10-race card at 2:15 p.m. Race 9 is the $50,000 Auburn Handicap for 3-year-old colts and geldings, with Nelson Family Racing’s D’honorable One the 8-to-5 morning line favorite.
