EmD's Jacob Pollowitz presents the winners of the 2012 Derby Hat Contest

PERFECT PIE SERVES UP ANOTHER WINNER

AUBURN, Wash. (May 5, 2012) – Perfect Pie has developed into one of the most consistent and determined Thoroughbreds at Emerald Downs.

Saturday, the 5-year-old mare made it two straight wins in 2012 and six wins in her last eight races overall with a half-length victory over Feeling Fancy in the $14,100 Food Services of America Purse for older fillies and mares.

With Debbie Hoonan aboard, Perfect Pie ran six furlongs in 1:10.04 on a fast track and paid $3.80, $2.20 and $2.10. Chris Stenslie is the trainer for owners One Horse Will Do Corp. (Jody Peetz) and Tony Loften.

A Kentucky-bred by Tale of the Cat, Perfect Pie has a lifetime record of 7-4-2 in 18 starts with earnings of $56,563, including $7,755 for Saturday’s triumph. Last year at Emerald Downs, Perfect Pie was 4-3-0 in eight starts and was the only horse to defeat the meet’s Top Claimer, Touch of Elegance, in a memorable June 11 race. Perfect Pie also was a factor in Stenslie winning honors as the meet’s Top Training Achievement.

Feeling Fancy, the 8-to-5 second choice ridden by Leslie Mawing, closed strongly to finish second and paid $2.20 and $2.20. Winner of the 2010 Federal Way Handicap, Feeling Fancy was claimed Saturday for a meet-high $20,000 by owner-trainer Dan Markle.

Redseasalt, ridden by William Antongeorgi, held third and paid $4. The lone 3-year-old in the race, Redseasalt opened a two-length lead while setting fractions of :22.60 and :45.83, but the Salt Lake filly weakened in the lane and settled for third.

Lilly’s a Jewel and Wave Rider completed the order of finish.

Jockey Mario Gutierrez after winning the 2009 Boeing Handicap at Emerald Downs

DERBY WINNING JOCK NO STRANGER TO EmD

Mario Gutierrez, the toast of the racing world after riding I’ll Have Another to victory in Saturday’s 138th Kentucky Derby, has been a regular visitor at Emerald Downs.

The 25-year-old native of Vera Cruz, Mexico has ridden here each of the last four seasons, compiling a 1-4-3 record in 17 starts while riding mainly stakes horses shipping down from Hastings Racecourse. The victory was a dead-heat in the 2009 Boeing Handicap as Holy Nova, ridden by Mario Gutierrez, and Elusive Horizon, ridden by Juan Gutierrez, produced the only dead-heat for win in Emerald Downs stakes history.

Also, congratulations to Mario's agent and Washington native Ivan Puhich, who at 85-years-old can still book mounts with the best of 'em!

    NOTES: Juan Gutierrez’
win on Amazing Legacy ($5.20) in the second race moved the 43-year-old rider into a second-place tie with Ricky Frazier on the track’s all-time victory list at 886 apiece….The 5-year-old mare Cider Burg came off a 22-month break and improved to three-for-four lifetime with a head victory over Up Your Plan in the fourth race. A Washington-bred by Petersburg, Cider Burg is trained by Larry Wolf for owner Paul Wolf and was ridden by Gallyn Mitchell, No. 1 all-time with 1,325 wins at Emerald Downs…Akina ($4) in the sixth race and War Wizard ($6.40) in the seventh became the third and fourth double winners at the 11-day-old meeting. Perfect Pie then made it five with her victory in the feature race…7-year-old Stormin Fast ($12) led gate-to-wire in the nightcap for the gelding’s 10th career victory at Emerald Downs. Stormin Fast was bred and owned by Larry & Veralene Hillis, and has been trained his entire career by Jose NavarroJoe Crispin recorded his second straight riding double and is now tied for first place with Leonel Camacho-Flores at 11 wins apiece…Camacho-Flores had a winner Saturday aboard She’s Tops ($4.20) in the third race…Week 4 concludes Sunday with a 10-race card at 2:15 p.m.
