TEAM EMERALD’S DAN CAMORO
FINISHES FIFTH, EARNS $50,000
Dan Camoro, representing Emerald Downs, turned in an excellent showing this weekend at the 14th annual Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas.
Camoro finished fifth out of 455 players in the two-day tournament at Treasure Island Resort & Casino, earning a check of $50,000 for his efforts. Camoro totaled $240.80 on his 30 mythical bets ($2 win & $2 place) to secure the biggest payday of his handicapping career.
A native of Tigard, Ore., Camoro earned his berth in the NHC finals by finishing ninth at the Emerald Qualifying Tournament last June.
Jim Benes of Countryside, Ill., captured the $750,000 first-place prize and an Eclipse Award as Handicapper of the Year after amassing a winning score of $268.40. The 50-year-old Benes, a professional horseplayer who qualified at Hawthorne Racecourse, also earned a $4,000 Day 1 bonus he received for registering the second-best score on Friday.
Jeff Hartz of Runnells, Ia., finished third at $244.00 to collect $100,000. Richard Grose of Wentzville, Mo., was the Day 1 leader, and faded somewhat to finish fourth with $242.60. He will take home $75,000. Dan Camoro of Tigard, Ore., rounded out the top five at $196.00. That score was good for $50,000.
The NHC 14 finals paid out to the top 40 finishers from a total purse of $1,500,000.
Christopher Larmey of Kennewick, the EQT winner, finished 15th and earned $10,000. Other locals: Kenneth Evans, Spanaway, finished 62nd with $171.20; John Johnson, Lake Forest, 124th/$144.20; Dave Mahy, Vancouver, B.C., 306th/$70.80; Dave Brownfield, Seattle, 331/$64.80, and Grant Rimer, Vancouver, B.C., t-344/$59.20.
