The first installment of the Winter Series Handicapping Contests was a success with 42 entries on January 5, 2013. The fifth floor at Emerald Downs was busy with regulars and friends as the contestants planned their wagers with extra strategy due to the novel approach to the wagering format. The contestants started with $90, but were required to wager $100 on a minimum of 10 races.
Brian Eng got a great start with a winning wager on Santa Anita race 1, betting all $90 on Supercilious, who prevailed by a length. Brian turned that initial wager into first place with a final bankroll of $322.50, which also paid $210 in prize money, as well as a spot in the April Finals Handicapping Contest April 28, 2013.
The top 5 won prize money, and the top 10 won an entry into the April Finals Handicapping Contest, where the grand prize is a trip to Las Vegas to compete in the 2014 National Handicapping Finals!
